BUSY SCHEDULE SHAKES UP WORKOUTS 'You're talking about practice'
By DON McDERMOTT
Remember when Allen Iverson got into trouble when he skipped a practice session with the Philadelphia 76ers? Iverson felt he needed a break; after all, NBA teams play 82 games from early November through mid-April. Which means each team plays two to three games a week over a period of 5-1/2 months. You're talking about practice? And when does that happen? Players in the Sunset Region Southwest Division and the rest of the Las Vegas-based Class 4-A teams can give an informed answer: Whenever there isn't a game, it's possible to squeeze in a workout. Take the Pahrump Valley girls and boys teams, for instance. The Trojans played Bishop Gorman in a division twin bill Tuesday night. Thursday, Sierra Vista comes to PVHS for another doubleheader. And Friday, the Trojans hit the road to Las Vegas to take on division rival Western. By the way, those games played Tuesday were the 14th for the PVHS boys (7-6) and 18th for the Lady Trojans (10-7). Before the season ends Feb. 14, the PVHS boys will have played 31 games (or 17 over the final 39 days of the season). The PV girls will have 12 more games -- all against division opponents. Practice has been at a premium since before the holiday break. One day was lost because of poor weather and one Southwestern doubleheader (at Durango) was postponed Dec. 17. The PV boys (7-6 in all games, 0-1 in the Southwest) played four games over five days (Dec. 26-27-29-30) in the Vegas Invitational tournament at Mountain View Christian School in Las Vegas. Coach Lonnie Shereck's team won three (against Las Vegas Trinity, Calvary Chapel and Mountain View Christian) after losing its opener to Class 2-A power Needles, Calif. Coach Jason Odegard's girls (10-7, 1-0 division) went 1-5 in the Las Vegas Classic at Centennial; those six games were played Dec. 27-29-30. The win was against Las Vegas Mojave, with the losses to Mesa (Ariz.) Dobson, Coronado, Anchorage (Alaska) Dimond, Douglas Minden and Sparks Spanish Springs. -- Beatty's boys were 1-3 in the Mountain View tournament, while the girls were 2-2 the week before in a Saints-sponsored event. The Hornets return to action Friday night at Lund in their Southern Nevada Class A League openers. The Southern League has been realigned this winter, with 11 boys and 10 girls teams competing. The girls teams include Tonopah and Round Mountain, along with Henderson International School, Indian Springs, Lake Mead Christian Academy, Lund, Pahranagat Valley Alamo, Sandy Valley and Las Vegas Trinity Christian. All of those schools are in the boys' league, along with Spring Mountain. Lund has emerged as one of the girls' powers, with six wins in seven pre-holiday starts. Alamo's boys are 8-1, with defending state 1-A champion Lake Mead at 7-4. |
