Bob Hopkins was sort of a missing man during most of the first five months Pahrump Valley's athletic teams were competing for the first team in Class 4-A.

Toward the end of the recently-completed basketball and wrestling campaigns, Hopkins -- for 13 years the coach of the Lady Trojans' basketball squad -- re-emerged for a variety of reasons.

Not the least of which was he is the coach of the Trojans' boys golf team.

The Trojans start preseason workouts at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Mountain Falls, with their first match March 5 against Pahrump Valley's former Southern Nevada Class 3-A League opponents Boulder City, Mesquite Virgin Valley, Overton Moapa Valley and Las Vegas Faith Lutheran.

Boulder City will host that first match, starting at 11 a.m. at Boulder Creek. The Trojans' home opener is March 12 at Mountain Falls, with the 3-A teams the opposition.

Pahrump Valley's first Sunset Region Southwest Class 4-A Division match is March 23 at Canyon Gate. The Trojans host a league match April 2, and on April 6-7, they entertain some of the top teams from the southwestern United States in the Pahrump Valley Invitational at Mountain Falls.

"We lost three boys who helped us finish second in the state (3-A) tournament last season," said Hopkins, as he sat in his office in the PVHS gym. "Cameron (Belcher) graduated ... Will Peers moved to Nebraska, and Anthony Franco moved."

Returning are Shane Lindemann, Elliott Owens, Daniel Shimakawa and Josh Spradlin, And several newcomers will be fighting for starting jobs, once workouts begin Monday. Steve Nygaard and Roy Goodell will be assisting Hopkins.

"One thing about playing in 4-A, we will go to a lot of great courses," said Hopkins. Among the Trojans stops: Canyon Gate, Rhodes Ranch, Red Rock Arroyo, Coyote Springs and Angel Park. The Trojans played Sienna when they were in the 3-A league.

The Trojans will also play a nine-hole match at Primm, with Desert Oasis -- coached by former PVHS athletics director and coach Larry Goins. PVHS and Desert Oasis are collaborating on hosting the Pahrump Valley Invitational April 6-7 at Mountain Falls.

The site for the Sunset Regionals has yet to be determined; that tournament will be played during the week of May 11-16, with Hopkins hopeful to land that event at Mountain Falls.

"Bonanza, Bishop Gorman, Palo Verde and Centennial are among the best teams in the Sunset Region," said Hopkins. "I think we can be competitive, but the boys have to stay academically eligible and be healthy.

"And one of the most important things is, 4-A coaches can work with their kids during the match; that was against the rules when we were in 3-A," said Hopkins. "I think the boys will enjoy playing in 4-A."

As for returning to coaching basketball again, Hopkins was neither evasive nor informative. "Yes, I would like to ... but not right now," said Hopkins, who has needs 21 varsity wins to reach 500 in a career that includes three state championships and almost a dozen league titles. "It (returning to basketball) will probably depend on the opportunity.

"I enjoyed my time off ... I was able to enjoy some things I wasn't able to do while I was coaching basketball," said Hopkins.
