CLASS A BASKETBALL REGIONALS Beatty teams bow in semis
By DON McDERMOTT
LAS VEGAS -- Beatty's girls and boys basketball teams had the odds stacked against them in the Southern Nevada Class A Regional tournament semifinals Friday, at Durango High School. The No. 4-seeded Lady Hornets went up against Southern League champion Lund and lost 58-44, in a game the Mustangs didn't break open until the third period, when they outscored Beatty 15-8 to carry a 42-29 advantage into the final eight minutes. Beatty, 11-12, had advanced to the semifinals with a 50-33 conquest of Nye County and league rival Tonopah on Wednesday. Autumn Spicer scored 11 points to pace the Beatty girls. Beatty's boys, 14-11, had to tangle with defending state champion Lake Mead Christian Academy. While the Hornets never backed off, the Eagles' defense prevented any major threat and prevailed, 58-32. Beatty had survived a 44-43 thriller against Spring Mountain on Tuesday to move into the semifinals. Joe Serrano fired in three 3-point field goals as he scored 11 points for the Hornets, in the game against Lake Mead. In regional finals, the Lund girls couldn't get past Pahranagat Valley Alamo, bowing 49-37 to Desert Oasis High School. Alamo had moved into the finals with a 39-23 conquest of Round Mountain. The Lake Mead boys ran past Alamo 75-53 to claim their third straight regional championship. Alamo defeated Henderson International School 57-46 in the semifinals. In the 1-A state tournament semifinals, to be played Friday in The Orleans Arena here, Lund's girls, 19-3, will play Virginia City, 21-3, at 11 a.m., while Alamo, 20-9, will take on Owyhee, 13-4, at 2:20 p.m. The boys' pairings are Lake Mead Christian Academy, 23-8, vs. Owyhee, 25-2, at 4 p.m., and Smith Valley, 24-5, vs. Alamo, 20-6, at 12:40 p.m. The championship games are Saturday at noon (girls) and 1:40 p.m. (boys). NOTES -- Robert Worden, the announcer for Pahrump Valley home basketball games, worked the microphone at four Southern championship games Saturday at Desert Oasis ... Class 3-A fans almost filled the Diamondbacks' gym -- nicknamed 'The Pit' -- for the girls and boys championship games ... The presence of the Boulder City, Moapa Valley and Virgin Valley pep bands made for a wild -- and loud -- atmopshere Saturday ... And one topic of conversation was: What's going to happen to Class 3-A in the 2009-2010 school year, when the Southern league will have only three schools left? Stay tuned. |
