LAS VEGAS -- A new Class 4-A boys' high school basketball champion will be crowned here this week, because Hug's Duke Williams came through in the clutch.

In the Northern Nevada finals Saturday, Williams popped in a one-handed shot with 2.4 seconds left to power Hug to a 49-47 victory against now-dethroned champion Reno at Spanish Springs High School in Sparks.

Reno defeated Las Vegas Cheyenne 76-72 in the 2008 finals at the Lawlor Events Center in Reno. Cheyenne was also eliminated, so Hug, 19-9, will be facing Bishop Gorman, 27-4, in the semifinals at 8 p.m. Thursday in The Orleans Arena. In the other semifinal, Eldorado, 23-8, and Palo Verde, 23-5, at 4:40 p.m.

The championship game is at 8 p.m. Friday.

In the girls' semis, defending champion Bishop Gorman, 27-4, will play Henderson Green Valley, 28-3, at 3 p.m. Thursday. At 6:20 p.m., Las Vegas Centennial (30-2) which beat Gorman 74-60 in the Sunset Region finals Friday, will play Reno, 23-5. The finale is at 6 p.m. Friday.

Williams drove the lane and lofted in the game-winner, nullifying a spectacular 31-point scoring effort by Reno's Austin Morgan, who had been the hero in the Huskies' victory against Cheyenne. Morgan's two free throws tied it at 47-47 with 39 seconds left.

Hug played for the last shot, with Williams attacking the Huskies' zone to get off the clutch shot. Williams finished with 12 points; seven came in the final period.

Morgan scored 10 consecutive points in the second quarter and 10 of Reno's 15 points in the final period, to no avail for the Huskies, who shot just 30 percent from the field in the game.

Hug is in the state tournament for the first time since 2002, which was when the Hawks last won a regional title.

Hug got to the finals by defeating 2007 champion Galena 66-56 and No. 1 Sierra Division seed Reno Bishop Manogue 73-70. Reno had ousted Carson 68-46 and Spanish Springs 64-59 in overtime.

Reno's girls held off Sparks Reed 60-55 to win the Northern 4-A championship and set up a battle against one of the scariest teams in Nevada. Centennial defeated Gorman 74-60 in the Sunset regional finals, forcing the Lady Gaels to get past Silverado 74-45 in a play-in game Monday.

The Reno girls lost starters Stephanie Rovetti and Megan Tabano on fouls in the fourth quarter, with Reed only eight points behind. Reed once trailed by 17 points, after going almost the entire second quarter without scoring.

In earlier regional games, Reno defeated Douglas Minden 76-43 and Galena 53-39, while Reed had advanced with wins against Carson 65-61 and Manogue 73-48.
