Support group forming A support group is forming for grandparents who are raising their grandchildren for an informal exchange of ideas and suggestions. Call 764-8416 for more information. Pet adoptions The Nye County Animal Shelter will hold pet adoptions 10-2 p.m. the first and second Saturday of each month at Hollywood Video, 240 S. Highway 160. The fees for adopting a dog are $85 and the fees for adopting a cat or kitten are $55. Fees include spay/neuter, vaccination, rabies shot, a bag of food and one-year county license. CASA recruiting volunteers The newly formed 5th Judicial District Court appointed special advocates for neglected and abused children is accepting applications for volunteers to work with children within the court system. A CASA volunteer will work directly with the children, schools, parents (biological and foster) and Social Services to determine their bests interests and help the court in deciding permanent placement. Legal services The Family Resource Center has partnered with Nevada Legal Services to provide low income residents with a virtual attorney service. At the Family Resource Center office, personal meetings to speak to an attorney regarding civil issues is available. Scout uniforms and equipment Pahrump has a number of boys ages 7-16 interested in scouting but need uniforms and gear. Donations of camping equipment and uniforms are appreciated. Pick up is available or items may be dropped at Pahrump Party Supply. West Star Ranch The West Star Ranch Old Dog Rescue Thrift Store is open 10-3 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, 780 Manse Road. The proceeds support the no kill rescue. They ask the public to spay and neuter pets. RCMS testing schedule Rosemary Clarke Middle School will adhere to the following test schedule for students. Don Norvell will demonstrate creating a free Internet site using a free online domain name and free Web hosting. Mike Erwin will present on his favorite top 10 free downloads and will provide a free CD of the programs and utilities he demonstrates to attendees. Parking at the rear of the library is preferred. United Way accreditation United Way will be accepting applications from not-for-profit agencies (501(c)3) in Nye County through March 9. Applications will be mailed this week to the agencies on the local United Way of Nye County's mailing list. United Way accreditation is required in order for 501(c)3 agencies to apply for the allocation of United Way funds. Completed applications may be mailed to United Way of Nye County, P.O. Box 5019, Pahrump, NV 89041 and must be received in the office, not just postmarked, no later than 5 p.m. March 9. Salvation Army yard sale The Salvation Army will hold a yard sale 8-2 p.m. Feb. 21, at the Salvation Army Corps, 721 S. Buol Lane. This is a multi-family event with a variety of items for all ages. Prom dress drive The NyE Communities Coalition is sponsoring the annual drive for gently used formal and semi-formal prom dresses, accessories and dress shoes to help girls go to the prom. Martinizing Dry Cleaning will donate cleaning. Financial contributions are also being accepted to help young men with the price of prom tickets. Library Youth Art Month March is Youth Art Month and the Pahrump Community Library will display local art by youths age 18 and under. To have art on display, bring it to the library after Feb. 23. The piece must be clearly labeled with artist's name, age, and title of work on the front, and a phone number on the back or bottom. Drawings, painting, crayon, sculpture, etc. will be accepted. Displayed works may rotate, depending on the number of entries. Library staff will make every effort to secure the items, but cannot be held responsible for damage or theft. Free radon test kits Radon, the number one cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, is a cancer-causing radioactive gas. The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Office and the Nevada State Health Division are offering free testing kits. The kits will be available for a limited time. The volunteer organization helps those who need to stay warm, dry, safe and secure in their homes. Applications are available at Galiano's American Grill at the intersection of Postal and Loop roads. Host a student The NWS Peace program, a nonprofit and CSIET-approved program, is seeking families to host a high school student from Ecuador, Turkey, Brazil, Vietnam, Belgium, Finland and other countries for the 2009 school year. Students are 15-18 years old, are pre-screened, speak English, have medical insurance and spending money for clothes, school supplies and entertainment. Host families are not paid but may be able to claim a $50 per-month tax deduction for charitable contributions. Students require a bed, meals and a caring family. Notice to veterans Those serving in the military from April 6, 1917 to the present have an office in Pahrump and Tonopah to take advantage of earned military benefits including: compensation, pension, education and death and burial benefits. The Pahrump office is located in JobConnect in the Calvada Eye, Building A. Ken Shockley and his staff work full time to assist in doing all they can to help veterans take advantage of their earned benefits. The hours are 8-5 p.m. at the office locations or call 537-2323. Those unable to come to the office may get a home visit to get the ball rolling. Women support groups No To Abuse is offering two support groups for women: A support group for women who have experienced domestic violence meets from 1-3 p.m. on Tuesdays and 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Mammovan The Nevada Health Centers Mammovan will be in Pahrump 8:15-3:15 p.m. March 23-26 at the Bob Ruud Community Center. To qualify for a mammogram, a woman must be at least 40 and have qualifying insurance. Mammograms are free for the uninsured. Appointments are limited and necessary. Call 877-581-6266 for more information and to make an appointment. Horse auction The Nye County Animal Shelter will auction six horses beginning at 10 a.m. Feb. 21 behind the sheriff's office, 171 N. Kittyhawk Drive. The animals to be auctioned are : Paint mare, 4 years old, halter broken; Black mare, 9 years old, for use as a pet or brood mare due to a previous injury; Dark bay mare, 13 years old, halter and saddle broken; Buckskin gelding, 20 years old, needs TLC fro having been abandoned in the desert; Bay mare, 20 years old, gentle and sweet; Palomino gelding, 10 years old, sweet, has had knee surgery but can go on gentle rides. Food drive Nye County Emergency Services will host another food drive 10-2 p.m. Feb. 28 in the parking lot of Albertson's, 200 S. Highway 160. Items needed include peanut butter, jellies, beans, noodles, rice and canned products such as meats, fruits, soups and vegetables. The food drive will help to keep the food banks full. Volunteers wanted The Nevada Outreach Training Organization (NOTO) needs volunteers to man the food pantry located at the offices, 621 S. Blagg Road. Duties include stocking shelves, checking expiration dates, preparing food boxes for clients, assisting with commodities delivery, inventory and other related tasks. Volunteers should be able to work four hours per day, for one or more days per week and must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds with and without mechanical assistance. Applicants must understand and be able to follow directions and be able to communicate orally and in writing. Background checks and drug screening are required. Free tax return service Pahrump tax aides are IRS trained counselors offering free tax return services beginning 9-3:30 p.m., every Wednesday and Saturday, through April 22, at the Bob Ruud Community Center, Room B. The service is open to young, low income taxpayers and seniors who may qualify for Earned Income Credit and are not receiving it. A handicap or the working-hour challenged may make other arrangements by appointment only.
