There are clear-cut favorites in the Southern Nevada Class A regional basketball playoffs -- The Lake Mead Christian Academy and Pahranagat Valley Alamo boys ... the Lund and Alamo girls.

But Nye County's 1-A schools -- Beatty, Tonopah and Round Mountain -- are in the regionals and will have much to say about who advances to the state tournament Feb. 27-28 at The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

The Southern regionals began Tuesday night, with Beatty (14-10) playing at home against Spring Mountain (9-17), Tonopah (5-13) traveling to Henderson International School (14-13) and Round Mountain (6-18) going to defending state champion Lake Mead Christian Academy (20-8). Alamo (20-6) was at home against Las Vegas Trinity Christian (13-12).

In girls games tonight, Beatty (9-11) is at home against Tonopah (5-10), while Round Mountain (11-12) entertains Lake Mead Christian Academy (9-16). Elsewhere, it will be Henderson International (4-17) at Lund (17-2) and Trinity (6-15) at Alamo (17-9).

The semifinals in both the boys and girls regionals will be contested Friday at Durango High School in Las Vegas. Friday's winners automatically qualify for the state tournament, but collide for the regional title and the South's No. 1 seed at the state tournament Saturday.

Last weekend, Beatty's boys lost 74-53 to Lake Mead, while the Lady Hornets were upset 46-42 by the Eagles.

Tonopah's boys defeated Lund 48-42, but the Lady Muckers were stopped 53-23 by the top-seeded Mustangs.

Round Mountain's boys fell 67-37 to Alamo, while the Lady Knights lost 60-24 to the Panthers.
