WELDON EDGED BY GAELS' FIELD Nye mat count: one champMUCKERS' SERFOSS PREVAILSSPECIAL TO THE PVT
WINNEMUCCA -- Cody Serfoss of Tonopah won the Nevada Class 2-A state championship at 145 pounds Saturday, salvaging what was otherwise a disappointing tournament for Nye County wrestlers. Two -- Zach Weldon of Pahrump Valley and Jordan Cutler of Round Mountain -- lost in title matches. Serfoss, who won the regional title a week ago, went 3-0 in the state tournament, contested in the events center here Friday and Saturday. Enroute to the title, Serfoss -- the only Mucker to advance to state -- pinned Jesse Andre of Battle Mountain in 2:29, pinned Trevor Gurley of Pershing County Lovelock in 27 seconds and stopped Indian Springs' Antone Allen in 1:55 in the finals. Weldon and Johnny Field of Las Vegas Bishop Gorman battled for the third time this season, with the same result, a victory by the Gaels' 171-pounder in the Class 4-A championship match. Saturday, Field survived a 3-1 showdown with Weldon, whose final record this season was 51-3, with all three setbacks inflicted by Field. Over the last two seasons, Weldon won the state 3-A 171 championship and was 54-2, which means he won 105 of 110 matches for the Trojans. Weldon pinned Reno Damonte Ranch's Frankie Christian in 1:09 in the first round and outpointed Michael Tootle of Shadow Ridge in the semifinals. In the the other two matches against Field, Weldon lost 4-3 in a Sunset Region Southwest Division dual and 10-6 in the regional finals at Bonanza. Pahrump Valley's 135-pounder, Chris DeMille, was 0-2, while 189-pounder Joe Colucci was 1-2. Round Mountain had three wrestlers, including Jordan Cutler, who lost 12-4 to Marico Escobedo of Lincoln County in the 119-pound championship match. The Knights' Jake Smith was 1-2 at 130 pounds, while James Browning was 0-2 at 145. Cutler defeated Wells' Seth Garrett in 1:44 and Battle Mountain's Ryan Thompson in 5:42 to advance to the finals. * Cimarron-Memorial (4-A), Winnemucca Lowry (3-A) and Incline (2-A) won team championships at the events center. Cimarron-Memorial finished with 132 points, beating out runner-up Las Vegas' 100. The Wildcats had a six-point lead after Friday's matches but could not maintain the advantage. Reno Bishop Manogue was third with 54 points, followed by Bishop Gorman (47) and Reno Galena (45). * In Class 3-A, Lowry succeeded Pahrump Valley as the team champion, as the Buckaroos outpointed Spring Creek 221-1/2 to 170-1/2. Boulder City was third with 110 points. Al Haines of Boulder City and a former Pahrump Powerhouse wrestler, won the state 130-pound title. * In Class 2-A, Incline, which moved down from 3-A because of enrollment declines, had 140 1/2 points. Battle Mountain was second with 124 and Laughlin was third with 83. Incline was eighth in the 2008 3-A state tournament. The Highlanders had three state champions, including heavyweight Jordan Cronin. |
