Seminar at JobConnect

There will be an educational presentation 10 a.m.-noon, Feb. 17 in the JobConnect building, 2101 Calvada Blvd.

The presentations will be made by the state Medicare SHIP office, Senior Dimensions and Social Security Disability on programs and services to further assist community members with their insurance needs.

Teens and Money seminar

The NyE Communities Coalition will hold a seminar intended for youth 9-1 p.m., Feb. 17 in the NyE Communities Coalition building, 2280 E. Calvada Blvd., Suite 101.

The seminar will deal with all areas of money management. Participants will learn how to set financial goals, budget to reach those goals and learn what to expect as typical costs of living independently.

It will also cover checking accounts, wise use of credit and the basics of investing.

United Way accreditation

United Way will be accepting applications from not-for-profit agencies (501(c)3) in Nye County through March 9.

Applications will be mailed this week to the agencies on the local United Way of Nye County's mailing list.

United Way accreditation is required in order for 501(c)3 agencies to apply for the allocation of United Way funds.

Completed applications may be mailed to United Way of Nye County, P.O. Box 5019, Pahrump, NV 89041 and must be received in the office, not just postmarked, no later than 5 p.m. March 9.

Northfield Ranch board members

Northfield Ranch Therapy with Animals Inc., a local nonprofit riding center, is accepting applications for new board members.

Friends of the Library meet

Valentine's silent auction

New Hope Christian Academy will host a fundraiser through Feb. 13.

There will be a silent auction and a raffle for dinner at the Pahrump Valley Winery's Symphony's Restaurant.

Auction booklets will be available Friday, Feb. 6 and bids will end Thursday, Feb. 13.

Raffle tickets for dinner at the Winery are $5.

Library Youth Art Month

March is Youth Art Month and the Pahrump Community Library will display local art by youths age 18 and under.

To have art on display, bring it to the library after Feb. 23. The piece must be clearly labeled with artist's name, age, and title of work on the front, and a phone number on the back or bottom.

Drawings, painting, crayon, sculpture, etc. will be accepted.

Displayed works may rotate, depending on the number of entries.

Library staff will make every effort to secure the items, but cannot be held responsible for damage or theft.

Works may be picked up after March 31 and items not claimed by April 15 will be discarded.

Grassroots committee meets

The Nye County Democratic Grassroots Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 16, at K-7 Lounge, 6050 Hafen Ranch Road.

The goal of the committee is to enable the community to effect change at the local level.

PAVED meets

The Pahrump Alliance for Valley Economic Development will meet at 5 p.m. Feb. 17 in Room B of the Bob Ruud Community Center.

The guest speaker will be Grey Burr from Anytime Fitness, Susan Zink of Windscapes Energy Systems and Wendy Barnett from Utilities Inc.

RPEN meets

The Pahrump chapter of Retired Public Employees of Nevada will meet at 3 p.m. Feb. 19 in the Pahrump Community Library.

Computer Users Group meets

The Pahrump Computer Users Group will meet at 1 p.m. March 2 in the large meeting room of the Pahrump Community Library.

Don Norvell will demonstrate creating a free Internet site using a free online domain name and free web hosting.

Mike Erwin will present on his favorite top 10 free downloads and will provide a free CD of the programs and utilities he demonstrates to attendees.

Parking at the rear of the library is preferred. Handicap parking is still in front of the building.

New members may pay a $5 annual membership fee at check-in and collect their raffle ticket.

Youth rally

First Southern Baptist Church will host a free youth rally for all youth at 6 p.m. Feb. 18 at the church, 741 E. Fehrs Way. Call 727-6038 for more information.

AGLOW meets

AGLOW, the interdenominational Christian women's organization will meet 9:30-11:30 a.m. Feb. 21 in the conference room of the Pahrump Community Library, 701 S. East St.

There will be a silent auction fundraiser, fun games, praise, worship and a time for personal prayer ministry. Everyone is invited.

RCMS testing schedule

Rosemary Clarke Middle School will adhere to the following test schedule for students.

It is important that students be in school on these dates, schedule other appointments accordingly.;

Feb. 18-23 -- Writing proficiency, eighth grade only;

Feb. 25 -- Nevada CRT, science, eighth grade only;

Feb. 26-27 -- Science make up for eighth grade only;

March 3 -- Math, sixth grade;

March 4 -- Math, seventh grade;

March 5 -- Math, eighth grade;

March 4-9 -- Math make up for grades 6-8;

March 10 -- Reading, sixth grade;

March 11 -- Reading, seventh grade;

March 12 -- Reading, eighth grade and

March 11-16 -- Reading make up for grades 6-8.

Horse auction

The Nye County Animal Shelter will auction six horses beginning at 10 a.m. Feb. 21 behind the sheriff's office, 171 N. Kittyhawk Drive.

The animals to be auctioned are :

Paint mare, 4 years old, halter broken;

Black mare, 9 years old, for use as a pet or brood mare due to a previous injury;

Dark bay mare, 13 years old, halter and saddle broken;

Buckskin gelding, 20 years old, needs TLC fro having been abandoned in the desert;

Bay mare, 20 years old, gentle and sweet;

Palomino gelding, 10 years old, sweet, has had knee surgery but can go on gentle rides.

These horses seem to be in generally good condition, however, Nye County makes no expressed or implied guarantee of temperment or health.

Food drive

Nye County Emergency Services will host another food drive 10-2 p.m. Feb. 28 in the parking lot of Albertson's, 200 S. Highway 160.

Items needed include peanut butter, jellies, beans, noodles, rice and canned products such as meats, fruits, soups and vegetables.

The food drive will help to keep the food banks full.

NCES will also be handing out disaster preparedness information.

VFW in February

The VFW hosts a swap meet the second and fourth Saturday of each month 9-4 p.m. on the VFW grounds. The third Saturday at 11 a.m., VFW Ladies Auxiliary at 1 p.m.

Wednesday -- poker, noon;

Friday -- dinner, 5-7 p.m. Cost is $6 or $7. Check the menu at 727-6072.

Saturday -- darts;

Sunday -- breakfast, 8-11 a.m.; the cost is $6 to $8.

League of Women Voters

The League of Women Voters will meet at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 18, in the JobConnect training room on Calvada Boulevard.

The guest speaker will be Oscar Reconco from the 2010 Census who will talk about the why, what and how of the Census and how to make it successful. The Census data will be used to distribute congressional seats and make allocations for the $300 billion in federal funds to local, state and tribal governments.

VEA Scholarship Program

Valley Electric will award six educational scholarships to assist qualified individuals in furthering their education.

Awarded will be two full-time vocational/technical scholarships and two continuing education scholarships.
