DeMeo seeing red, possible lawsuits
The Pahrump courthouse corridors were cleared Thursday morning as two handcuffed and shackled prisoners shuffled into the Government Complex through the side door closest to the Nye County Sheriff's Office and entered temporary Justice Courtroom B, presided over by Justice of the Peace Kent Jasperson.

MPs are honored for saving family in fire
Two soldiers from the 272nd Military Police Co. received the Army Commendation Medal in Mannheim, Germany, in late January for their heroic actions in rescuing a family from an apartment fire.

County list details use of tax dollars
When Nye County Commission Chairman Joni Eastley heard about a pending bill by Assemblyman James Settelmeyer, R-Gardnerville, to eliminate the requirement that counties publish a quarterly list of bills for payment in the newspaper, she was so enthused about it, she offered to testify in its favor before the state Legislature.

Business' goal is family activities

In addition to the cost for having sixth-grade students remain in elementary schools, social and educational issues are also being considered by Nye County School District officials.

CARSON CITY -- Assemblyman Ty Cobb, R-Reno, has submitted resolution language asking Nevada's agencies and commissions to begin a dialogue with the federal government on the proposed nuclear repository at Yucca Mountain.

Valley Disposal to reduce rates
Tuesday night the Pahrump Town Board voted unanimously to accept a request from Pahrump Valley Disposal for a 1.55 percent rate reduction for picking up garbage, effective March 1.

Rotary provides generous grant to J.G. Johnson
J.G. Johnson Elementary School recently received a generous $250,000 literacy grant from the Pahrump Rotary Club.

Incorporation study back on Nye's agenda
Nye County commissioners will consider another request from the Pahrump Town Board to fund a $39,000 University of Nevada, Reno study on incorporation, during a meeting that begins at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Bob Ruud Community Center.

Who makes what? County bills tell all
The list of salaries shows the top-paid salaried county employee is Nye County Chief Prosecutor Kirk Vitto, a 19-year employee, whose gross paycheck every two weeks is $5,454.24, or $141,810 per year, according to the quarterly list of bills for payment.

Tortoises threaten town's economy
Once again the desert tortoise raises its leathery head and aims its beady little eyes toward Pahrump, threatening to stop all building and development, according to Al Balloqui, economic development director for the town.

Location of benches set
BEATTY -- How long they will take to install is another question, but the locations for Beatty's eight park benches and trash receptacles have been chosen. With audience participation, the Beatty Town Advisory Board made the decisions at its Feb. 11 meeting.
