Winnemucca to host 4-A tournament
By DON McDERMOTT
Zach Weldon, Chris DeMille and Joe Colucci will represent Pahrump Valley in the Nevada State Class 4-A Wrestling Championships at the Winnemucca Events Center Friday and Saturday. The senior trio earned the trip north by placing in the Sunset Regionals last weekend at Bonanza High School in Las Vegas. * Weldon, 49-2, will wrestle at 171 pounds. * DeMille, 44-9, is in the 135-pound weight class. * Colucci, 46-9, is the Trojans' 189-pounder. "We have three good wrestlers going to state," said Craig Rieger, the Trojans' coach. "They have been solid wrestlers all season." Last season, the Trojans won the state 3-A team championship and had Weldon and James Chapman emerge as individual champions. "The biggest difference between wrestling in 4-A and 3-A is that in 3-A, we knew who we were going to wrestle, because for years, we had been going up against those kids," said Rieger. "We saw a lot of the wrestlers we faced during the season, but we really didn't know them." Weldon lost 10-6 in overtime to Las Vegas Bishop Gorman's John Field in the 171 finals as he finished second. Colucci and DeMille claimed third-place finishes to qualify for the state tournament. Elliott Owens, the only non-senior to compete in the regionals, was among the non-qualifiers. The others were Josh Armendariz, Paul Miller, Jaret Lydon, Travis Linsday, Anderson Floyd, Ryan Holt and Taylor Gourley. Combined, the 12 Trojan wrestlers were 24-18. The Trojans finished sixth among 17 teams with 109 points. With five individual champions, Cimarron-Memorial, out of the Northwest Division, scoring 2491/2 points to win the Sunset title. The Spartans had nine wrestlers place in the top three in the region meet to advance. Bonanza was second with 173 points, followed by Sierra Vista (1331/2) and Shadow Ridge (1121/2). Two-time defending state champion Britain Longmire led the way for Cimarron, winning the 119-pound championship. Cimarron's other champions were Travis DeGroat (130 pounds), Colby Garrison (135), Jason Schuele (140) and Aaron Garcia (189). Bonanza had four state qualifiers, led by Stuart Montenegro, who was first at 160, and Mike Zellner, who set the pace for the Bengals by opening the championship round with a victory at 103 pounds. Two-time defending state champion Mojave had a pair of first-place finishers in Josh Cabrerra (152) and Daryl Eddings (215), and the Rattlers also had four state qualifiers. Bishop Gorman also had two regional champions. Field had a takedown and near-fall with 18 seconds left in the second overtime period to pull out a 10-6 win over Weldon. Steven Hernandez took the title at 145 for the Gaels. Other regional champions were Cheyenne's Kenneth Davis (112), Centennial's Brady Worden (125) and Sierra Vista's Andrew Ramos (285). |
