Players sought The Pahrump Valley Predators baseball club is seeking two or three additional players for the 2009 season. The team is for 11- and 12-year-old boys. The season starts March 1, so players are needed as soon as possible. For information, contact Brent Ahlstedt at 537-7172. Youth baseball Pahrump Valley Babe Ruth League baseball registration has been extended through Feb. 21, which means the late registration fee has been waived. The new times are 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesdays, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturdays. Age groups are 4 to 18, with May 1 the age determination date. T-Ball and Rookies will be in the 4-8 age groups; Minor, Major, Junior, Senior in the 9-18 age groups. The cost will be $65 for 4-8s and $95 for 9 to 18s. Payment arrangements will be available. Tryout dates are Feb. 19 (5 p.m. for 9-10-year-olds, 6 p.m. for 11-12s and 7 p.m. (13 and up) and Feb. 21 (9 a.m. through 11 a.m.). For information, call 751-9595. Anyone planning to be a manager or coach should go to the sign-ups and pick up information packets. That information should be returned as soon as possible. Feb. 18: CPR certification program. Feb. 19: Tryouts, 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 21: Tryouts, 9 a.m. to noon. Feb. 21: Player drafts (9-10 at 3 p.m., 11-12 at 4 p.m., 13-15 at 5 p.m.) Feb. 28: Mandatory field preparations (managers and coaches), 9 a.m. Feb. 28: Manager meeting to discuss schedules, equipment and fundraiser, noon. March 2: First day of practice. March 28: Opening Day, 9 a.m. Pahrump ended its affiliation with the Williamsport, Pa.-based Little League program at the end of the 2008 season. Basketball Youth basketball continues at Ninth Grade Academy Saturday, as well as Feb. 19, 20, 21, 27, 28, March 6, 7, 13, 14. Coaching the boys' teams will be Tim Wombaker, John Toomer, Andy Andersen, Bryan Holmes, Robert Worden, Steve Jersic, Steve Bahret, Garth Oakey, Dave Harris and Oscar Lopez. Girls coaches are Renae Lindgren, Susan Toomer, Tommy Cochrell, Joe Roderick, Doug Maughan, Chaz Chumley and Steve Behret. Meeting The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association board of control will meet March 4-5 at Coronado High School in Henderson. Check the NIAA Web site (www.niaa.com) for a copy of the agenda. The summer meeting is June 17-18 at a site to be announced in Reno. * State basketball tournament week at The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas Feb. 25-26-27-28 will feature several conferences and leadership training courses for administrators. Check the NIAA winter bulletin for information. Also in the bulletin is a report on the National Federation of High Schools and the law. Softball The Pahrump Valley Softball Association will hold an organizational meeting Sunday at 7 p.m. in Room B at the community center. For information, contact Ken Causey at 727-6413. Applications Information and applications for the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association's annual top 10 student-athletes, presented by the Farmers Insurance Group and Lifetouch Photography, are now posted on the Web site, www.niaa.com. Application deadline is March 13. All candidates must be seniors. The award is for those student-athletes who exemplify total school involvement (high academic status, multiple sports participation, other school activities and unique community service projects). * The NIAA has scheduled several pre-season rules clinics for 2009 spring sports. All of the Southern Nevada meetings will be conducted at Silverado High School Thursday. All will start at 3 p.m.; the sports are baseball, boys golf, fast-pitch softball, swimming, track & field and boys volleyball. Quarter Auction The 2009 Quarter Auction -- the major fundraiser for Pahrump Valley's junior golf programs -- will be March 14 at the Pahrump Nugget. The fundraiser, which has raised more than $100,000 since its inception in the early 1990s, annually attracts more than 300 people, who go after some major prizes -- and can win one by donating at least a quarter. The admission price is $20 or $60 and makes the purchaser eligible to win prizes. The money pays for scholarships and other expenses incurred in running Pahrump Valley Youth Golf Founders Club programs. Send admission/donation to Larry and Elaine Goins, at 2440 S.
