Reno baseball owners buy basketball team
RENO -- The owners of Reno's minor league baseball team have announced the purchase of the Reno Bighorns, an NBA Developmental League team. Stuart Katzoff, managing partner of SK Baseball that is bringing Triple-A baseball to Reno, said it made sense to grow both teams together. The Reno Aces are scheduled to make their home debut at the city's new baseball stadium in April. "It just makes sense that as we're building the (Aces) organization, we grow the Bighorns as well,'' Katzoff said. "It's a great product.'' The Bighorns made their debut in Reno as an expansion franchise last March. But majority owner David Kahn said the sour economy and financial concerns of some investors prompted the sale. "This had nothing to do with the Bighorns or the city of Reno,'' Kahn said at a Monday news conference. SK Baseball also has ties to professional basketball. Herb Simon, part owner of the NBA's Indiana Pacers, is also a partner with Katzoff and his father, Jerry Katzoff, in the Reno stadium project. "We were the logical buyers, given what we were doing with baseball and the investment we're making in the community,'' said Stuart Katzoff. "And for us, it's just an opportunity to keep professional sports here in Reno.'' |
