AT PVHS 'Twelfth Night' staged Feb. 21PVT A unique carnival-style version of "Twelfth Night" will be presented by the Pahrump Arts Council and Pahrump Valley High School Drama Department at 7 p.m., Feb. 21, in the high school auditorium. In the style of a roving carnival group, the troupe of actors and technicians will present Shakespeare's comedy in a new way. At the start of the production, the actors will arrive on stage carrying trunks filled with costumes and props. Eight actors will play 18 different roles and the audience will actually see the actors change character and costume. Director Ann Tully worked with her designers to create a timeless yet contemporary feel for the production. The costume design combines modern dress with Shakespearean dress, illuminating the concept of always playing a role and hiding the actor's true character behind it. Tully said her concept for the production originated in this idea of role-playing and costumes. "All characters in the play are in disguise at some point or another. They are continually pretending to be something they are not and they all eventually learn to be honest with themselves and others," Tully said. Each year the festival creates a production of a great Shakespeare classic to go on the road and visit communities across four western states. The group, composed of 11 people, serves as both the acting company and technical crew for each production, with actors, a stage manager, technical director and company manager. The tour is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts: Shakespeare for new generations. Pahrump Valley High School has hosted the Utah Shakespearean Tour since 1996. Tickets are available at Ace Hardware, the Pahrump Community Library, Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce and will be available at the door. The cost is $10 for the general public, $8 for Pahrump Arts Council members and $5 for students. |
