Wtih nine days remaining in the regular season, the Beatty boys and girls basketball teams are in the thick of the Southern Nevada Class A League basketball title chases -- and more importantly, are closing on clinching solid seeds for the regional playoffs that start Feb. 17. The Beatty boys moved into sole possession of third place by sweeping Nye County rivals Round Mountain 59-43 Friday and Tonopah 60-44 Saturday. Coach Brian Hayes' team is now 6-2 in the league, ranking the Hornets behind defending state 1-A champion Lake Mead Christian Academy (7-0) and Henderson International School (7-1). At Beatty, Anthony Regalado had 16 points to lead the Hornets past Round Mountain (3-4). Ivan Maldonado added 14 points and Jacob Sumpter 10 for Beatty. Clint Wilson led Round Mountain with 20 points. Regalado and Joe Serrano each scored 16 points to lead the Hornets over the Muckers. Ramiro Hernandez added 12 points for Beatty, which led 16-5 after one quarter. Tonopah is 2-5 in the league. Lake Mead Christian Academy 49, Henderson International 28 -- At Lake Mead, the Eagles sprinted to a 21-2 lead and coasted to a crucial 49-28 home win over Henderson International. Lake Mead (15-7, 7-0) held Henderson International to two points in the first 111/2 minutes. That first field goal for the Wolverines came from Sampson, who was making his season debut. Sampson, who recently moved from the Atlanta area, faced frequent double teams. He was held to four points but altered several opposing shots in the paint. Landon Littlefield led Lake Mead with 15 points. Demetrius Turner had 11 points and 10 rebounds, eight of which were offensive, for the Eagles. Lake Mead moved into sole possession of first place in league. The Eagles don't play another league game until Friday at home against Lund. Beatty's remaining league games are against Sandy Valley (Saturday, 1 p.m. home) and at Lake Mead Christian Academy (Feb. 13, 3 p.m.) * Beatty's girls are fifth in the league at 4-3, after splitting with Round Mountain (a 46-32 winner) and Tonopah, which fell 49-42 to coach Aimee Senior's Hornets.
