Red shirt Fridays support the troops
By GINA B. GOOD
Driving by Lakeview Executive golf course on any Friday morning, you will likely notice that just about everyone playing has on a red shirt. That's no accident; it's by design. "We've been wearing our red shirts on Fridays for quite a few months now," said Phil Wolfgang. "Anything to support the troops." Larry Beadle, a retired Army veteran, said he was wearing his one and only red shirt. "I bought it for this purpose and I never had a red shirt before. I quit serving myself in 1986." Looking dapper in his red shirt, 80-year-old Bud 'Two-beers' Miller said he's been playing golf for about 30 years here and enjoys the camaraderie of the game. Gene Lyons experienced her first hole-in-one the day before her eightieth birthday and this year she made another at age 88. "I got it on the 16th hole," she said, "after having two strokes and taking a bad fall. But here I am, wearing red to support our troops." Golfers aren't the only people wearing red. Red Shirt Fridays is a national movement that is also popular in Canada, where in 2006 thousands gathered on Parliament Hill for a rally led by their prime minister. A Google search turns up many Web sites dedicated to wearing red on Friday to support American troops. "We have 49 people wearing red shirts now and the number keeps growing," said Wayne Thomas, whom the group said was their spokesperson and organizer. |
