McMillin, Pearson win offroad titles

First overall and first in class (1400) in the Vegas to Reno Offroad Race last weekend was a Ford truck (31) driven by Andrew McMillin; the winning time was 17:47:52.195.

BEATTY -- Andrew McMillin's Ford and David Pearson's KTM Team motorcycle won the major championships in the Vegas to Reno Offroad race -- a 1,000-mile, three-day event contested in Nevada last week.

One driver, yet to be identified by race officials, died of an apparent heart attack on the course in Esmeralda County, Friday. That same day, a helicopter flying support for the Greg Nunley team, crashed in Esmeralda County; a pilot, crewman and a passenger sustained minor injuries. Reports indicated the three were treated and released.

McMillin required 17 hours, 47 minutes, 52.195 seconds to complete the race in Class 1400, contested over three days. Second in 17:51:46.976 was a Ford driven by Tim Herbst.

On Day One, the course covered 332 miles from Beatty to Tonopah, with Day Two's trek 366 miles from Tonopah to Hawthorne in Mineral County. The race ended in Dayton, east of Carson City.

Pearson, aboard his KTM, was first in the motorcycle race in 17:47:03.086, more than five minutes ahead of Class 45TK rider Ricky Brabec (17:52:19.414).

"We estimated that there were at least 10,000 people along the route at one time or another," said Casey Folks, whose Best in the Desert group sanctioned the race. "We believe that at least $30 million was spent during those three days. In Hawthorne, 25 service stations reported that they sold out of diesel fuel, while other stores said they sold out of ice, bottled water and other items. It (the race) was a huge success."

* 2000 -- Greg Parker (22nd), 22:17:51.867;

* 8100-- Greg Foutz (23rd), 22:19:05.429;

* 3000 -- Karl Scanlon (38th), 24:34:10.492;

* 5500 -- Nick Baldwin (43rd), 25:00:09.522;

* 3100 -- Rod Hall (57th), 29:21.41.742;

* 4400 -- Kevin Sacalas (69th), 31:12:41.383;

* 1700 -- Perry Coan (70th), 31:20:12.633;

* 3700 -- Clive Skelton (79th), 33:37:46.890;

Sportsman -- Kevin Swanson (Class 1800), 28:58:11.289;

Quad P -- Greg Stuart, 19:51:40.196;

UTV -- Brandon Schueler, 30:29:20.773.

NOTES -- 111 of the 146 cars and trucks that started the race completed the event; the slowest time was 41:47:16.071; Blake Henn's Class 7100 vehicle spent an average of almost 14 hours per day on the course ... There were 103 motorcycles and quads that started; 89 finishes, with the slowest, a quad assigned to Ray Fay, taking 41:24:09.711 to take the checkered flag.
