Monday morning, Community Bank of Nevada, located at 3250 S. Highway 160, was busy but not hectic. It was not the movie version of a bank closing with people lined up around the block demanding money.

Instead, there was a representative of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) greeting people just inside the door, handing out information and answering questions.

Other personnel were inside helping customers to close their accounts. There were customers waiting in the sitting area, but the place was by no means jampacked.

"Most of these people don't even need to be here," said Richard Schmalzer, regional ombudsman for the FDIC. "They have to take care of their accounts, but it doesn't have to be today."

Schmalzer said all deposits, savings, certificates of deposits and IRAs are insured up to the maximum allowed by the law.

He also said customers expecting an automatic deposit of their Social Security check in the next week or so should wait to close their account until the check is deposited because if the account is not open, it will be sent back to the government and could take a long while to retrieve. However, in all other cases, "People should start moving to make those changes in automatic deposits and payments.

Nevada State Bank representatives were at Community Bank, helping customers make a smooth transition of accounts to their bank.

"The bank was closed on Friday due to substantial loses in acquisitions, development and construction loans," said Schmalzer. "They lost their capital and could not continue to operate, and the Financial Institutions Division (FID) took over and appointed the FDIC as receivers.

"Customers can go to our Web site and plug in the information about their accounts and tell if they are fully insured. People can also do that at their new bank and ask them to look up the information online for them."

Customers of Community Bank of Nevada may phone the FDIC at 1-800-331-6306 or visit their Web site at fdic.gov/bank/individual/failed/community-nv.
