WEEKEND ROUNDUP
By CHARLENE DEAN
Fall is in the air in spite of the temperatures. It means the pace of activities in this part of the desert is on the rise. Here's the weekend in a nutshell. * The artist's reception for Georgia Christiansen will be today at 1 p.m. in the Pahrump Community Library. Her works will be on display until Sept. 18. * A new open-forum art show opened at the Charleston Peak RV Clubhouse on Monday. The work, totaling over 50 pieces, is on display from 29 artists. Later next month, the show will coincide with PAC's third annual Art and Wine event. More on that later. * The last movie of the summer at Honeysuckle Park was Wednesday, but there are other options, though none are free. "G.I. Joe: The rise of COBRA" is still playing at Saddle West and a new flick, "Pineapple Express," can be seen at 8 p.m. tonight and tomorrow night on the patio at K-7 Pizza. * Relay for Life is on tap this weekend as well, starting at 6 p.m. tomorrow evening in Petrack Park. There are fundraisers happening all over town, including the addition of two brightly-colored toilets being delivered to various people in the community. The story ran in Wednesday's edition of the PVT. * The Lumineria ceremony will be at dusk and the Lumineria bags are available at the booth located next to the basketball court. * The bull-riding contest at the Maverick ends with the finals on Saturday as part of the CD release and pajama party for the band, Onara. The party for all ages starts outside at 6 p.m. and will move inside, where 21 is the age to be, around 10 p.m. Wear your pjs to the after party, there will be a contest for best pajamas. Jan Jensen said the over-21 party will also feature a frozen T-shirt contest, beer pong and drink specials. Of course the music will be provided by Onara. * Don't miss the classic rock show with Playground at the Pahrump Nugget Stagebar Lounge. The band, comprised of musicians from various well-known bands, will play from 7 to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday. * Goldfield is celebrating Goldfield Days and the Goldfield Land Auction this weekend. There will be vendors, food, a parade, a chili cook-off, artists and the annual Goldfield Land Auction. The celebration starts today and ends Sunday. The auction will be Saturday. * The pool is still open. Free-swim nights for this week are from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight for teens. Youth 13 to 19 are welcome to refreshments and free entry provided by the Nevada Outreach Training Organization. Family night at the pool will be Monday, Aug. 17, and will be sponsored by St. Martin's in the Desert Episcopal Church. The events are alcohol-, tobacco- and drug-free. * Pahrump Arts Council will host the huge annual general meeting and open house starting Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Bob Ruud Community Center. Each of the committees of PAC will have a table set up to pass information to the public regarding purpose. Some committees will have table to showcase their talents. The general meeting, with introduction of the new board members, will be at noon and the doors will close at 3 p.m. Enjoy the weekend. |
