Letters to the Editor
Thank you for Brenda The benefit for Brenda Myers, held Sunday, Aug. 2, at the Stagestop Casino was a big success. It was standing room only, with a potluck and various band members from different bands playing with Dean West and the Smokin' Gun Band. Also in attendance were the Smokin' Gun Sisters Gunfighters and the High Desert Linedancers. The following businesses donated gift certificates or items: Gisela's Restaurant, Arbor's Flowers, Gotta Getta Map, Guitar West, All the Time/Any Time Paralegal, Sunflower Fashions, Marcelino's Healing Arts, PV Air Conditioning and Heating, Secret Sisters, The Other Pizza Place, DJ's Head Shed, C Designs, Lois Layne's Deli, A Hairitage Styling Parlor, B's Embroidery, Romero's, High Desert Hair, Pahrump Shoe Repair, Oscar's Pest Control, Irene's Casino, Absolutely "U", Debbie's Pest Control, My Paralegal, The High Desert Linedancers and Sonic Drive-in. Also donating items were Teri Rogers, Terry Morden, Betty Margrave, Arlene High, Betty Bondi, Angeline Windholz, Clem Harris, Shirley Barlow, Venita Fredericks and Deadwood Dave. A big thank you goes out to all the anonymous people who donated money. Special thanks go to Nena Kelly, Ginny McCorkle, Marian Maxfield, Teri Rogers and Kathy Sperry. And a big thank you to the Stagestop Casino and Dean West. MARIAN MAXFIELD It's not 'near' Amargosa Valley The BLM submitted an article to the Pahrump Valley Times announcing scoping meetings for the Solar Millennium energy project "near" Amargosa Valley. Well, it's not located "near," it is located right in the middle of our town, and the people here are very upset about it. All the land around the school, community center, fire department, ambulance, medical clinic -- Solar Millennium even took our park. Not to mention the fact that Solar Millennium wants to reroute Farm Road, which is a main east west road through Amargosa Valley. There will be between 500 and 850 workers on the site during construction. Has anybody ever stopped to think what this is going to do to our school and the children attending there? Don't get me wrong because I am not against solar energy, I am against where Solar Millennium has decided to locate their plant. If they take the southernmost portion of their BLM right-of-way and move it one mile north of Frontier Road, everybody would be happy. If that does not work then they can develop one of their other sites. They have several. JERRY NELSON Amargosa Valley Do we need one more organizer? I read with interest the latest letter to the editor from Stefanie Lopez, and it strikes me as odd. First, she states that she has received so much "positive feedback and opinion," then later she says, "With all the negativity I have received..." Which one is it Miss Lopez? I can assure you, if more people supported your point of view, things would have changed here long ago. Fact is, many of us moved here to get away from the politics and cookie-cutter lots that litter much of Vegas and California. We like things the way they are and do not want someone coming in telling us how to live. We do not need the urban sprawl, troubles and crime that come with becoming a "Mini Las Vegas." Our town manager lacks an understanding of these facts. He wants to change the very fabric that is Pahrump and make us some kind of city in the desert. Collecting signatures in defense of a man who wants not only this but tries to restrict our Second Amendment rights is bound to get you some hostility. Sure, some may express themselves in a less than professional manner, but the fact is the majority, who may say nothing, agree that we do not need to be a booming metropolis to keep us happy. I always find it odd that outsiders come here and proceed to try to dictate to us how we live our lives. Would I like to see some businesses in town? Sure, but not at the expense of the lifestyle we have all come to love here, nor at the expense of the water table, which can barely support the existing residents and infrastructure. If Pahrump is not your cup of tea, then I suggest moving back to Vegas and enjoying life instead of trying to change our town into something it is not. I have seen you talk about changes you would like to see here. Why not be open with the people of Pahrump and tell us exactly what changes you think are needed here? I see a lot of talk but never any specifics. Who knows, you might end up getting a few more supporters, however unlikely I feel it is. In closing, I have to ask, who asked you to work for me, or for that matter anyone else in this town? GEORGE COX Speed trap Watch your back, folks. Pahrump is now officially a speed trap. I was driving my grand-niece home from a restaurant around 9 p.m. when one of Nye County's finest (G. Cortin, I.D. No. 72224), pulled me over and gave me a ticket for driving at the blistering high speed of 51 mph. That's a whopping six mph over the speed limit. Needless to say, this ruined an otherwise delightful evening for my niece as well as myself. The sheriff's department is constantly complaining about being understaffed and under-funded, but it seems the deputies have so much free time on their hands they can amuse themselves by driving around looking for people to burn by giving them tickets for tiny infractions. Maybe they need to have their budget cut. Is this the kind of law enforcement we need and want in Nye County? And remember, what goes around, comes around. I'm going to court on this one. I have a legitimate defense, and may or may not prevail. However, I want the judge to see the face of the "law enforcement officer" who burned a Nye County citizen in immaculate standing over a matter so trivial and insignificant it falls off the bottom of any scale, ruined a lovely evening for a sweet young girl and wasted the time of a court that has real issues to deal with. I used to have a very benign attitude towards our sheriff's office. That is no more. DAVID ALEXANDER Thanks to fire-rescue I would like to thank the Pahrump Valley Fire-Rescue medics from Station 1, Dustin Knutson and Chase Laimore, for transporting my daughter to the hospital last week. From the moment they arrived, I was confident my daughter was in good hands. They worked quickly and efficiently to evaluate the situation and stabilize her condition; their training and qualifications were apparent. These young men were intelligent, impeccably groomed and extremely professional. As I rode with them to the hospital I learned the driver had grown up in Pahrump and was a graduate of PVHS. He and his wife live in Pahrump and are raising their family here. What a wonderful role model he is for the young people in our town; I am certain his parents are very proud. The other medic stayed at my daughter's side and monitored her condition. I as extremely impressed and grateful. I am originally from the Midwest and I must say, for a small town, Pahrump is very fortunate to have these qualified services available. Fortunately, my daughter's health problem was not as critical as some I saw brought into the emergency room. Nonetheless, these young men treated me with the same respect and dignity as the more critical cases being brought in by other medics. Fire Chief Scott Lewis has done a fantastic job with his crew and has plenty to be proud of. We spent about 6-1/2 hours in the emergency room that night and saw several medic teams come and go a number of times. Every team acted as professional as the one that transported us. A team from Station 3, Rodd Fernandes and Ray DeLucchi, brought in a cardiac arrest patient, and I have never seen anyone work as hard as those two did to keep that person alive. I also witnessed people being rude and obnoxious to the medics who were trying to help them. Not once did any of the medics lose control of the situation or act disrespectful to these people who were being so vile. Just imagine what they have to contend with on a daily basis. I've had 12 surgeries in the past three years and spent numerous days and nights in Las Vegas emergency rooms and hospitals. Many of the doctors and nurses who have treated me couldn't measure up to these medics. Thank you, gentlemen, for the exceptional work you do and for the extraordinary service you provide to Pahrump. The taxes we pay are not adequate for the services you provide. DEBORAH WALSH |
