CASA recruiting volunteers

The newly formed 5th Judicial District Court appointed special advocates for neglected and abused children is accepting applications for volunteers to work with children within the court system.

A CASA volunteer will work directly with the children, schools, parents (biological and foster) and Social Services to determine their bests interests and help the court in deciding permanent placement.

Volunteers must pass a background check and provide CASA with the minimum of a two-year commitment.

Free floride varnish

Nevada State Health Division Frontier and Rural Public Health in conjunction with the NyE Communities Coalition will offer free floride varnish to all patients 6 months to 18 years old during the month of August.

Mt. Charleston Elementary

Enrollment

Mt. Charleston Elementary will register new students for the 2009-10 school year beginning 8-11:30 a.m., Aug. 10-17.

Aug. 18, the hours change to 8 a.m.-3 p.m.

Bring proof of residency (power bill, renter's receipt, builder's permit, etc.), original birth certificate, original immunization record and Social Security card for copying.

Children must turn 5 years old by Sept. 30.

Class lists with teacher name and room number will be posted outside the school office after 6 p.m. Aug. 21.

School starts Aug. 24 for grades 1-5 and Aug. 27 for kindergarten. Supply lists for all grades K-5 will be available at local businesses.

New parent and kindergarten orientation

A special orientation for new parents will be 9-10 a.m. in the multi-purpose room. There will be a tour of the school and a question and answer session.

Kindergarten student pre-assessment will be Aug. 24-26. Times were assigned by phone.

Fifth Sunday sing

There will be an old fashioned hymn sing 6-7:15 p.m., Aug. 29 in the Bob Ruud Community Center.

Several local church praise teams will share songs and there will be a puppet ministry presentation. The night will end with an ice cream social.

Song teams wanting to share in participation should call Karl Ritterby, 751-1421.

Churches may bring banners.

Autism support

The Autism support group will meet from 7 to 9 p.m., the third Tuesday of every month at Wulfy's.

Fundraiser car washes at Wulfy's

The following organizations will hold fundraiser car washes in Wulfy's parking lot:

Aug. 15 -- 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., ROTC;

Aug. 22 -- 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., PVHS Cross Country.

Pahrump Gunfighters

The Pahrump Gunfighters will meet at 10 a.m. Aug. 8 in the Bob Ruud Community Center.

The club is looking for new faces to join its reenactment team. This is a chance to get dressed up and show off acting skills.

4-H Teen Council garage sale

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension 4-H Teen Council will sponsor a garage sale 7 a.m. to noon, Aug. 7 at the 4-H building, 1651 Calvada Blvd.

The proceeds will benefit the 4-H Junior Master Gardeners to increase the size of the pumpkin patch and give more young people a chance to learn about bugs, plants and worms.

Rummage sale

Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church will hold its giant summer rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Aug. 7 and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 8 at the church, 1300 E. Highway 372.

There will be lots of furniture, household items, books, clothing, linens, toys and crafts. Lunch and pastries will be available.

Jeep Junkies

The Jeep Junkies Club will meet at 6 p.m., Aug. 5 at the Elks Lodge.
