BEATTY -- With a berth in the Southern Nevada Class A baseball playoffs definitely within reach, Beatty is at home Friday against league and Nye County rival Tonopah in a doubleheader.

The first game between the Hornets (4-2 Central Division, 15-3 in all games) and Muckers (0-0, 2-4) is at 1 p.m. A Central doubleheader that matched Tonopah and division-leading Indian Springs (2-0, 10-3) last Friday has not been reported.

The Southern regionals will be played May 14-16 at Pahranagat Valley Alamo, with the top two teams in the South Division squaring off against Nos. 1 and 2 in the Central.

The top two teams in the regionals advance to the state tournament, to be played May 21-22-23 at a site to be announced.

The Northern 1-A playoffs are May 15-16 at Carlin. The pairings are No. 1 vs. No. 4 and No. 2 vs. No. 3 in that double-elimination tournament.

The Hornets, coached by Brian Hayes, conclude the regular season May 8 at Henderson International School (1 and 3 p.m.).

Last Thursday, in a non-division twin bill against Big Pine,Calif., Beatty prevailed 11-4 and 12-8, moving the Hornets to 11-1 in games against non-Central rivals.

In the first game, the Hornets had eight hits, with Kyle Marchand going 2-for-4 with three runs batted in. In the nightcap, Beatty had 10 hits, with Jacob Sumpter going 2-for-3 with four RBI.

In the Northern League, Carlin is 4-0 (13-6, all games) going into the home stretch.

* Beatty's fast-pitch softball team lost doubleheaders to Tonopah and Lake Mead Christian Academy in Southern 1-A league action.

The Muckers (4-2, 5-5) won 14-4, 19-6, while the Eagles (7-3, 9-11) prevailed 15-3, 16-0. Beatty is 2-6 league, 4-8 in all games.

Beatty, coached by Loy Koeller, plays Friday at Alamo (8-0, 9-6) and May 8 at Henderson International School (17-2 as an independent) to end the regular season.

The Southern softball playoffs are May 14-16 at Alamo, with the top four teams qualifying. Currently, Alamo, Indian Springs, Lake Mead and Tonopah rank first through fourth, respectively.

The Northern 1-A tournament is May 15-16 at Carlin, with the state tournament May 22-23 at Majestic Park in Las Vegas.
