South 1-A teams battle for berths in the playoffs

The Southern Nevada Class A baseball, softball, track and golf campaigns are headed toward rapid conclusions. * Beatty's fast-pitch softball team is at home against Nye County and Southern Nevada 1-A rival Tonopah today, with the twin bill starting at 1 p.m. The Lady Hornets are 2-2 in the division, 4-2 in all games as they take on the Muckers (2-2, 3-5). Beatty goes to Pahranagat Valley Alamo May 1 and closes the division season May 8 at Henderson International School. * Beatty's baseball team was at Big Pine, Calif., Thursday, then resumes division competition May 1 at home against Tonopah. On May 2, there is a home doubleheader against Sandy Valley, and on May 8, the Hornets go to Henderson International School. * Tonopah's baseball team will open its Central Division campaign today at home against division leader Indian Springs. The Muckers (2-4 in all games) and Thunderbirds (2-0 division, 10-3) will start the twin bill at 1 p.m. Indian Springs swept a division doubleheader against Beatty (2-2, 11-3) earlier this month. On Tuesday, the Muckers travel to Mountain Ridge Park in northwest Las Vegas to play Spring Mountain; the doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. Tonopah is at home against Round Mountain (2-2, 7-7) May 8. The top two teams in the Central and South baseball divisions advance to the Southern regionals, to be played May 14-16 at Pahranagat Valley Alamo. The state tournament is May 21-23 at a southern site to be announced. In baseball, Alamo leads the Southern Division at 4-0. * In the sole division for fast-pitch softball teams in Southern Nevada, Alamo (6-0, 7-5) is first, with Indian Springs (3-1, 4-3) second. Tonopah is at home against Sandy Valley (0-2, 0-8) May 1, then travels to Lake Mead Christian Academy (3-3, 5-10) May 8 to complete the division season. The top four teams in the South qualify for the softball regionals, to be played May 14-16 at Alamo. The state tournament is May 22-23 at Majestic Park in northwest Las Vegas. * Beatty's track team is at Pahrump Valley Tuesday (3:30 p.m.). Las Vegas Bishop Gorman will also be at that meet. * Tonopah's track team is idle until May 2, when it competes in the Richard Lewis Invitational, the first of three consecutive weekends the Muckers will travel to Moapa Valley High School in Overton. The Bushman Invitational is May 8 and the Southern 1-A regionals May 15 are on the MVHS track. The state meet is May 22-23 at Del Sol High School in Las Vegas. * Tonopah's boys golf team is at Jackpot April 30 and at North Tahoe May 7 to complete the regular season. The Southern 2-A regionals are May 14 at Rivers Edge in Needles, Calif., with the state tournament May 19-20 at Genoa Lakes and Edgewood-Tahoe. Tonopah was third in a tournament at Bishop, Calif., Monday, totaling 531. The host Broncos had 477, while Ely White Pine had 512. For the Muckers, Denver Otteson was medalist with a 4-over par 76. Other Tonopah scores were Drew McLeod 106, Chris Greber 107, Alex Bridgman 113, Matt Beaubien 126 and Anthony McElroy 138. For Round Mountain, Brad Hooker had 94, Will Sweeney 97, Dan Sweeney 102 and Clancy Carver 113. * Denver Otteson has attracted the attention of several NCAA Division I schools because of the Mucker's prowess as a placekicker. According to Denver's father, Robert, he has received letters of interest from BYU, Oregon, Arizona State, Idaho, Navy, Army and Brown.
