With two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Pahrump Valley boys' golf team is making a concerted effort to qualify for the Sunset Region Class 4-A playoffs.

Which would be excellent, considering the Trojans are the host team for the final day of the Southern Nevada playoffs May 14. The first round -- May 13 -- will be played at the Badlands.

The state tournament is May 20-21 at the Red Hawks Lake complex in Sparks. The top two teams and top five players from non-qualifying teams from each of the regionals (North, Sunrise, Sunset) will advance to the state tournament.

The North regionals will be played May 11-12 at Thunder Canyon and Washoe Valley. The first round of the Sunrise regionals are set for Dragon Ridge, with the second day at Mountain Falls.

Tuesday, the Bob Hopkins-coached Trojans made their most significant step yet in their quest for a regional berth, winning a Southwest match at Bear's Best.

With Daniel Shimakawa carding a 1-under-par 71, Pahrump -- third in the latest division standings -- had a team score of 389.

The teams that shared the division lead trailed; Bonanza was second at 404, followed by Bishop Gorman at 408. Sierra Vista finished at 410.

Sierra Vista's Jacob Pinney and Gorman's Conner Morris each shot 73.

For the Trojans, Shane Lindemann had 76, Elliott Owens 74, Dorian Patel 81, Ryan Hammar 87 and Josh Spradlin 93.

NOTES -- All six Pahrump Valley starters are products of the 25-year-old Pahrump Valley Junior Golf Association; most have competed in that developmental program for at least eight years, playing in many of the weekly and monthly tournaments sanctioned by the PVJGA.
