LAS VEGAS -- In a battle between Southwest League girls track and field unbeatens Pahrump Valley and homestanding Bonanza, the Trojans won 85-67 Wednesday.
Sierra Vista was third at 33 in what was the Trojans' penultimate Southwest meet. They close the division dual-meet campaign at home Tuesday against Bishop Gorman. Beatty, a Class A team, will also compete (3:30 p.m.) The Lady Trojans are 7-0 against league opponents.
Pahrump Valley coach Andy Schneider was happy with the senior leadership of McKenzie Dean and Ashley Rencher. The Trojans moved up from Class 3-A to 4-A this school year.
"These girls, the seniors, have been around for four years," he said. "They won a state team title (Class 3-A) as sophomores. They came back last year and had a tough time in 3-A. Going to 4-A was a big event, (but) they're not intimidated at all."
Dean, headed to the University of Utah, won the 1,600-meter run (5 minutes, 42.6 seconds) and 3,200 (13:16.4), was second in the 800 behind teammate Ashley Lindgren, and anchored the winning Trojans' 1,600 relay team (4:33.9). Pahrump Valley also won the 3200 relay in 11:36.1
Rencher won the shot put (40 feet, 6 inches). Pahrump Valley's Stevie McElheny won the 100 hurdles (17.5) and 300 hurdles (51.5).
Freshman Taylor McJunkin won the long jump at 15-7.
Bonanza's Shirley Pitts took the 100 (12.4), 200 (season-best 25.2) and 400 (season-best 57.0).
In the boys meet, Aaron Simon won two events to help the host Bengals score 116 points and beat Sierra Vista (81), Pahrump Valley (58) and Spring Mountain (16).
Simon took the 110 hurdles (15.3) and 300 hurdles (42.0).
Sierra Vista's Delano Helmuth won the high jump (6-0) and long jump (19-9).
For Pahrump Valley, Alex Anderson was first in the triple jump at 42-1 and Steven Schmidt won the shot put at 44-5 1/2.
Pahrump Valley's final regular-season meet will be the Richard Lewis Invitational May 2 at Moapa Valley.
The Sunset/Sunrise regionals are May 6, 8 and 15 at Del Sol, which will also host the state championships May 22-23.
