The older I get, the less tolerant I seem to become, yet at the same time, the older I get I seem to have more patience.

Political satire turning into public policy
WASHINGTON -- Monday morning the government braced for austerity, as the government understands that. Having sent Congress a $3.5 trillion budget, the president signaled in advance -- perhaps so his Cabinet members could steel themselves for the new asceticism -- that at the first meeting of his Cabinet he would direct the 15 heads of departments to find economies totaling $100 million, which is about 13 minutes of federal spending, and 0.0029 percent -- about a quarter of one-hundredth of 1 percent -- of $3.5 trillion.


Eat smart and exercise much
It has been nine weeks since I made a commitment to shed excess pounds and get my cholesterol and triglycerides back into the healthy range as indicated on the pharmaceutical-sponsored, color-coded chart. My doctor noted in late January that the copious amounts of rich holiday foods I consumed during November and December had a slightly negative impact on my health numbers.

Washington missing the whole point
I'd like to offer a word to the wise in both political parties. If the Democrats think the tea party protests held in hundreds of locations across the fruited plain on April 15 were only about taxes and President Obama's proposals to raise taxes, and if Republicans think the tea parties were only about Obama and the Democrats, then both parties were reading the tea leaves entirely wrong.
