BIZ EXPO THIS WEEKEND

Businessman stresses positive mental attitude

Most people know what the acronym PMS stands for, but car dealer and soon-to-be restaurateur Tom Saitta's motivational speech at the Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce's Biz Expo kickoff breakfast Thursday emphasized PMA: positive mental attitude.

"I am so tired of this negative stuff that it makes me ill. Because every morning when we get up and we get our feet on the floor to get out that day, we have a choice of what kind of day it's going to be," Saitta said to a packed audience at the Pahrump Nugget Hotel and Casino banquet room.

For Saitta, co-owner of Saitta Trudeau Chrysler Jeep Dodge who hopes to open his Italian restaurant Tommasino's by June 1, it will always be a sunny day. He called negative media the worst thing that happened to the country.

"Everyday when we get up, in the newspaper we see, 'unemployment hits record 10 percent!' And it puts us all in a negative mood and we think something's wrong. Do you know what 10 percent unemployment really means? It means nine out of 10 people are doing great and working. That's what it means!" Saitta said to applause.

Saitta called salesmanship the greatest profession in the world, what all the vendors in the room will be doing this weekend at the Biz Expo.

"Absolutely nothing in this world happens until somebody, somewhere, sells something," Saitta said.

He added, "those of us that are part of the 10 percent that don't have a job, they can have a job any time they wanted to. Any company would hire somebody on straight commission would they not? Straight commission means you channel, you control and you direct your own destiny. You get paid for what you're worth. You're worth what you produce. If you go to work, it's your head to the grindstone. You can do whatever you want in America."

Saitta gave some tips on selling:

* An introduction is important, welcome them. Ask their name and repeat their name.

* Show and explain your product with enthusiasm.

* Identify the product and explain the benefits.

* Adopt the personality of the buyer.

* Never disagree with the buyer.

* If you can't get them something, show them something else.

* Listen to the customer, shut up and let them talk, they will tell you how to sell your product or service.

* Sell with integrity.

* Stay in touch with customers after the sale.

Saitta read from a rousing speech by former Green Bay Packer Coach the late Vince Lombardi on "The Habit of Winning."

"There is a second place bowl game, but it is a game for losers played by losers. It is, and always has been, an American zeal to be first in anything we do and to win."

Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lucy Ivins used some of that PMA in her remarks about the upcoming 11th Annual Biz Expo, which takes place from noon to 7 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. tomorrow at the Pahrump Nugget.

"Because of the economy I felt we were going to struggle to fill the Biz Expo but we have matched last years numbers which I'm really grateful for. It's just a wonderful opportunity for the public to come and meet the local business people and see what it is they do, what it is they have to offer and to help build business relationships," Ivins said.
