The Wolf Creek Band, Willie Nelson's pick for new band of the year for 2009, will play the Maverick Saloon and Dance Hall at a hoedown 5-9 p.m. tomorrow evening.

Jan Jensen, owner of the Maverick, has been booking entertainment for Pahrump for years and has contacts everywhere it seems.

On a recent visit to Primm for a Willie Nelson concert, Jan said she turned around to see a familiar face standing behind her. "The guy looked at me and said 'Hi Jan, you should know me.' It was J.R. Davenport," Jensen said.

When asked why he was in Primm, Davenport explained that he had formed another band and it was playing with Willie Nelson.

Having known Davenport for some years, Jensen talked him into playing the Maverick in a special performance.

Jensen said, "It's going to be a blast. We're giving away free draft beer and hamburgers and hot dogs."

The tickets are $20 and Jensen said even though she has to pay Wolf Creek, for the ticket price, she wants to give something back.

Davenport, 47, grew up in San Antonio, Texas, where his dad had a small country band. He's been playing in bands and performing for audiences since he was 12. It became a family affair when he and his dad were joined by his mother, sister and brother. The family eventually did some recording and put out a few records.

Davenport has been in the oil business as a broker, worked in Las Vegas casinos doing shows with his own group and managing shows for others, been in real estate and had his own pool business, but music is where he is able to express himself.

The performance at the Maverick will be outside. Jensen said she has chairs and tables but patrons are welcome to bring their own.
