Trojans sweep tri-track meet; golfers second

HORACE LANGFORD JR. / PVTMcKenzie Dean of Pahrump Valley won three events in a tri-meet at Las Vegas Spring Valley Tuesday. The senior distance runner was first in the 800-, 1600- and 3200-meter runs.

Continuing what has been an excellent spring campaign, the Pahrump Valley boys and girls track teams swept a wind-blown, cold-weather tri-meet at Las Vegas Spring Valley Tuesday.

In the boys meet, the Trojans edged the host Grizzlies 75 1/2 to 60, with Calvary Chapel scoring 39 1/2. The PV girls won with 102 1/2 points, while Spring Valley had 49 and Calvary Chapel 19 1/2.

For the Andy Schneider-coached Trojans:

* Nick Stearns won the 110-meter hurdles in 0:15.95 and the 300 hurdles in 0:44.09;

* Conner White won the 400 in 0:55.34;

* Zach Weldon was first in the 200 in 0:24.96;

* Steven Schmidt won the shot put at 42 feet, 7 3/4 inches;

* Alex Anderson led the triple jump at 42-1 1/4;

* The 4x200-meter relay team was first in 1:36.29 and ran a first-place dead heat in the 4x100 with Calvary Chapel in 0:45.57.

* Stevie McIlheny was first in the 100 hurdles in 0:18.11;

* Taylor McJunkin won the 100 dash in 0:12.65 and the 200 in 0:27.65, as well as the long jump at 14-11;

* McKenzie Dean was first in the 1600 in 5:57.4, the 800 in 2:35.28 and the 3200 in 13:34.54;

* Ashley Rencher won the discus at 129 feet, 5 inches and the shot at 39-5;

* Kayla Foster was first in the triple jump at 28-9;

* won the 4x200 in 2:03.24 and the 4x400 in 4:53.79;

* Ashley Lindgren won the 400 in 1:02.46.

Pahrump Valley goes to Bonanza Tuesday, to compete against the Bengals, Sierra Vista and Spring Mountain, starting at 3:30 p.m.

The Trojans will be home April 28 to go against Bishop Gorman and Beatty, starting at 3:30.

* Pahrump Valley's boys golf team finished second in a Sunset Region Southwest Division match Tuesday at Rhodes Ranch.

The Bob Hopkins-coached Trojans shot 419 to finish three strokes behind Bonanza. Bishop Gorman was third with 427, while Sierra Vista had 438, Spring Valley 443 and Clark 529.

The Trojans had two players among the top four; Shane Lindemann had 79, while Ryan Hammar had 82.

The medalist with 74 was Yongsoo Shin of Bonanza. Kyle Graham of Spring Valley had 80.

* In a Class 2-A Southern League meet at Black Mountain, Tonopah was fifth with 562, trailing winner Needles (Calif.) 493, Las Vegas The Meadows 524, Mountain View Christian 525, and Lake Mead Christian Academy 535.

Denver Otteson of Tonopah was second in the medal chase, shooting an 86. Joey Vasquez of Lake Mead had 78.

Pahrump Valley goes to Red Rock Arroyo in Las Vegas to play its Southwest 4-A rivals.

Tonopah was at Ely White Pine Thursday and travels to Bishop, Calif., Monday.
