GONZALEZ IN TOUGH SETBACK

By DON McDERMOTT

Mike Gonzalez yielded a first-inning homer to Kris Bryant in the first inning, which is not a new experience for pitchers in the Sunset Region Southwest Class 4-A Division in baseball.

Bryant, who hit 10 homers and drove in 36 runs last season for Las Vegas Bonanza, cracked his eighth homer of 2009. The Bengals, despite a strong effort by Gonzalez, a senior righthander scrapped out two more runs to stop Pahrump Valley 3-0 Wednesday, at the PVHS field.

"We worked on defense in a pre-game workout today ... we should have worked on hitting, too," said Chris Iverson, the Trojans' coach. Pahrump Valley had only two hits and rarely mounted any serious challenge offensively.

Bengal righthander Herberto Orozco pitched six shutout innings, as well as going 3-for-3 with a run batted in for the Bengals (4-2 division, 9-12 in all games).

Pahrump Valley, which plays at Spring Valley today (3:30 p.m.) fell to 2-5 in the division, 5-13 in all games. Mario Franzese pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the save.

Elsewhere in the Southwest:

Sierra Vista 4, Durango 3 -- At Sierra Vista, the host Mountain Lions (5-2, 17-3) took advantage of two quirky plays in the bottom of the seventh inning and won 4-3 against second-place Durango (6-2, 10-14).

Trailblazers starter Danny Reynolds was on cruise control after a bumpy start and retired the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh. But Mountain Lions right fielder Brooks Klein reached first when his grounder to second took a wicked hop and bounced off Durango's Matt Grisnik.

Klein promptly stole second and No. 3 hitter Matt Holman then lifted a seemingly routine fly ball. However, with the sun finally shining after an afternoon of overcast conditions, Trailblazers right fielder Ray Cardenas couldn't find the ball and it fell in for the game-winning single.

Desert Oasis 11, Western 3 -- At Western, Zane Killebrew settled down after allowing three runs in the first inning, pitching a complete game as the Diamondbacks beat the Warriors. Desert Oasis scored seven runs in the fifth. Dylan Krasn went 2-for-2 with a double, two runs and three walks, and Brennen Stott added a double. Courtney Woods was 2-for-2 with an RBI for Western.

Bishop Gorman 20, Churchill County 1 -- At Rivera Park, Tyler Wagner was 2-for-2 with a homer and five RBIs as the Gaels routed the Greenwave in the Gorman Easter Classic.

Jeff Malm added a homer, double and three RBIs. Stephen Manthei, Johnny Field and Erik Van Meetren also homered. Field and Manthei had three RBIs each, and R.J. Santigate doubled twice.

Tyler Rankin pitched a two-hitter to get the win.

Bishop Gorman 30, Cornerstone Christian (Texas) 2 -- At Rivera Park, Santigate went 5-for-5 with two home runs, a double and nine RBIs as the Gaels rolled. Neil Lawhorn, Joey Rickard, Sean Mersch and Malm also had home runs. Jerry Mitchell doubled twice for the Gaels, who scored 12 runs in the second and 14 in the third.

Gorman is 7-0 in the division, 20-3 in all games.
