What's ahead for Trojan athletes?

Some of disa ... mostly data ... Plus other thoughts off the top of my head (and other strange places) ...

The 2009 schedules for Pahrump Valley's football, volleyball and boys' soccer teams have been released.

Trust this: there are absolutely no frills, but there are a couple of annoyances.

On the volleyball schedule, there are non-league matches against Moapa Valley and Virgin Valley -- the two schools that voted, in effect, to eliminate Pahrump Valley from the Southern Nevada Class 3-A League in 2007. There is nothing wrong with being pleasant; in fact, there isn't enough of that kind of thinking.

But just because those two schools are having trouble putting together schedules, why should Pahrump Valley help out Virgin Valley and Moapa Valley, the schools that have created chaos?

Earlier this spring, Boulder City's baseball and softball teams visited Pahrump Valley for non-league games. A couple of fans asked why did Pahrump Valley want to move into Class 4-A, when it had such a good thing going in 3-A?

They were stunned to learn that the move was not the choice of Pahrump Valley coaches, administrators, fans, players ... or anybody else in the area. Pahrump Valley was forced to move to Class 4-A because of unbelievably poor decisions by the Nevada Interscholastic Activites Association hierarchy.

The NIAA was warned then it was headed for trouble with that decision. Before the 2007-2008 school year ended, Faith Lutheran requested it be allowed to move up to 4-A; the NIAA said all right -- again defying logic. What that decision meant was the Southern Nevada Class 3-A League would be reduced to just three schools -- Boulder City, Moapa Valley and Virgin Valley.

We have no idea what the NIAA is doing about correcting this abysmal problem. There are all kind of rumors, but we're not going to add speculation to aggravate what is a horrific problem for people intimately involved in Class 3-A athletics.

* Back to the schedules ...

Pahrump Valley's volleyball team is not planning a season-opening tournament at home; the Trojans will go to the prestigious Las Vegas Invitational Aug. 28-29 to launch their second season in Class 4-A.

A 20-match season including eight home-and-home series with Sunset Region Southwest Division opponents, as well as other non-4-A matches with Faith Lutheran and Boulder City.

The boys' soccer team will play 16 division games, as well as non-4-A matches against Boulder City and Faith Lutheran. There is no Gold Cup-style tournament on its schedule.

The football team will play eight division games and a 4-A non-league contest against Mojave, from the Northwest Division. Thus ends, at least temporarily, an entertaining series with Faith Lutheran.

The schedule for the Pahrump Valley girls golf and cross country teams are to be announced. But remaining unanswered, at least officially, is when the Pahrump Valley girls' soccer team will compete. Will it be in the fall, or winter? Stay tuned.

North Carolina won the NCAA Men's Division I basketball championship. Big whoop! I had picked Louisville to beat the Tar Heels in the title game. I still chose 45 games correctly. I know ... I know ... so what!

The UConn women are marvelously fun to watch. Talk about achieving outstanding team work and putting aside personal differences to compete for one objective: perfection; 39-0 ... outstanding. And with the players coming back next season, it could happen again.

The baseball season is already underway, but these predictions are still necessary. Remember, this information is not to be considered when placing a wager at your friendly, neighborhood sports book.

Congratulations to Ashley Rencher, for her selection as one of southern Nevada's top 10 scholar-athletes. It's an honor well-deserved.
