Trojans second at Palo Verde track

LAS VEGAS -- While homestanding Palo Verde dominated the Spring Break Invitational Track Meet it hosted Tuesday, Pahrump Valley's teams put in some strong performances.

Walter Birdsong and Chaz Thomas each won two events to lead the Palo Verde boys team to a convincing win.

Birdsong won the 110-meter hurdles (15.7 seconds) and 300 hurdles (40.0), and Thomas took the shot put (46 feet, 3 inches) and discus (145-6).

In team scoring, Palo Verde won with 228.33 points. The Panthers were followed by Pahrump Valley (104), Valley (94.5), Eldorado (82), Durango (67.83), Rancho (35.5), Bishop Gorman (33.5) and White Pine (32.33).

Pahrump Valley's Nick Stearns won the high jump (5-8) and pole vault (11-6).

Also scoring for the Trojans were Shane Ervine (fourth, 200, 0:23.1), Sergio Castro (fourth, 400, 0:53.4), Conner White (third, 800, 2:07.8) and Pahrump Valley's four relay teams.

Two -- in the 4x200 and 4x800 -- the Trojans were third in 1:35.6 and 9:03.1, respectively. The Trojans were fourth in the 4x100 in 0:46.2 and 4x400 in 3:42.1.

GIRLS

Nicole Ameli took the long jump (15-5) and triple jump (32-10) for Palo Verde, which was first with 169 points. Pahrump Valley had 127.5, with Valley (104.5), Eldorado (71), Rancho (60.5), Durango (53.5), White Pine (47.5) and Bishop Gorman (21.5) trailing.

Pahrump Valley's Ashley Rencher won the shot put (40-3) and discus (112-9).

Ashley Lindgren was first in the 400 in 1:00.3 and McKenzie Dean was first in the 1600 in 5:50.9.

Lindgren was second in the 800 in 2:34.8; Dean was second in the 3200 in 12:58.4; Melissa Ewing was second in the 100 hurdles in 0:18.6; Pahrump Valley was second in the 4x800 in 11:24.5 and Megan Hamrick was third in the shot put at 31-0.

Taylor McJunkin, Katie Anderson, Stevie McElheny, Kayla Foster and Amber Shields also scored for the Trojans.

* Pahrump Valley will compete Saturday in the UNLV High School Invitational, with 32 boys and girls to represent the Andy Schneider-coached Trojans.

The meet, to be contested at the Lied Athletic Complex on campus, will start with field events at 8:30 a.m. Track events begin at 9 a.m.

It is a timed meet, with events to start at specific times. The final events are the 4x400-meter relays; the girls' race will be at 4:40 p.m., with the boys to follow at 5 p.m.

The Trojans go to Spring Valley Tuesday, then are idle until April 21, when they travel to Bonanza for a quadrangular that includes Sierra Vista and Spring Mountain.

Bishop Gorman will visit Pahrump Valley April 28 for the Trojans' final home meet of the season.

The Richard Lewis Invitational, at Overton Moapa Valley, is May 2 and concludes the regular season.

The Sunset regionals are May 6, 8 and 15 at Del Sol High School (which will be the site for the state championship meets May 22-23).
