Obituaries
David L. Podbreger David L. Podbreger, 78, passed away March 30, 2009, in a Las Vegas hospital. He was born Feb. 22, 1931. He served for 20 years in the U.S. Navy as Chief Petty Officer and photographer aboard the USS Constellation. He owned D&M Appliances in Pahrump for a number of years until his health forced him to close the business. David loved music and enjoyed playing his accordion and keyboard at numerous functions around town. He was very creative when it came to building things, from a cool go-cart to a dark room and a generator -- there were no limits. He bought an old greyhound bus and converted it into a beautiful motor home. He loved camping and the out of doors, where he took plenty of pictures. He was Post Commander of the VFW in Pahrump for many years. He attended church regularly until his health failed and was a very loving, caring, ambitious, courageous man and will truly be missed. His wife Marilyn Podbreger of Pahrump; sister Wanda Kerr of Eugene, Ore.; six children, Daniel W. Podbreger of Eugene, Darlene F. Wilson of Modesto, Calif., Darryl T. Podbreger of San Bruno, Calif., Denise M. Roswald of Copperas Cove, Texas, Dale K. Podbreger of Kalispell, Mont., and Deborah J. Martin of Victorville, Calif., numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and a host of extensive family members, survive him. "We love you, Dad and will miss you dearly. We know you're in a better place and that God has his loving arms wrapped ever so tightly around you. God bless you." Services will be held at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery; the date is pending. (03/30/2009) Kenneth Earl Yantis Kenneth Earl Yantis, 56, passed away March 26, 2009, after a long battle with cancer. He was born Oct. 4, 1952, in Toledo, Ohio. His family moved to Southern California where he graduated from James Madison High School. He served in the Army for three years during the Vietnam conflict. He owned a landscape and pool business for several years. He moved to Pahrump in 1993, and was a steelworker in Las Vegas, working on casinos, schools, etc. His loving wife of 16 years, Brandy Wallace; mother Nancy Pilcher and stepfather Bernard Pilcher; sister Donna Farrar, all of Portland, Ore.; father O. Earl Yantis of Newhall, Calif., and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins in Ohio survive him. He was preceded in death by his sister, Sharon Anderson of Everett, Wash. The family plans a small, private memorial service. (03/26/2009)
Charles W. Price Charles W. Price, 78, a resident of Pahrump since 1994, passed away April 2, 2009, at Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas. He was born Dec. 15, 1931, in Littlefield, Texas, to James and Nella Price. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Price; children, Terrill Price and Kevin Price; step-children Donald Schliem, Jennifer Schliem and Beverly Becker; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren from his two sons and seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren from his step-son and step-daughters. He was preceded in death by his beloved grandson, Shane. He was a wonderful husband, father, step-father and neighbor and will be sadly missed by all. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Nathan Adelson Hospice Foundation would be appreciated. (04/02/2009) ![]() Lanae Ann Nelson Lanae Ann Nelson passed away March 14, 2009, in Nathan Adelson Hospice in Los Angeles. Her loving daughter and husband were at her side. She was born Nov. 9, 1934, in Salt Lake City, Utah and was an 11-year resident of Pahrump. Earn I. Nelson, her husband of 37-years; daughter Christine C. Nelson of Pahrump; and, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren survive her. She was preceded in death by a brother, Douglas B. Fairless of Midvale, Utah; and her parents, Bert Fairless and Hazel Miller. Memorial services and a celebration of life was held March 18 in Magna, Utah. Many friends and relatives were in attendance. (03/14/2009)
James F. Sloan James F. Sloan, 76, passed away April 5, 2009, in Las Vegas. He was born July 28, 1932, in Waltham, Mass., and was a resident of Pahrump for 10 years. He was veteran and served during the Vietnam Conflict. He served in the Navy for four years before joining the U.S. Air Force in 1955, where he was with photo intelligence. In 1971, he went to work for the Texas Department of Corrections. In 1979, he joined the Tom Green County Community Supervision and Corrections Department working as a felony probation officer, felony supervisor and assistant chief. He was on the Texas State Committee and Evaluation Adult Probation Commission in 1988. He held teaching certificates for sociology and psychology. He was a member of the National Panel of Consumer Arbitrators and an instructor for DWI education programs. His recognitions included Phi Theta Kappa, Mu Epsilon chapter, Honor Fraternity, Phi Gamma Mu International Honor Society in social science and Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society in education. He was a member of the DAV and Escapees RV Park. James is survived by brother Billy Sloan of Maine; daughters Dorothy Vermillion of Stamford, Texas, Christina Tyson of Wichita Falls, Texas, Ann McCray of Wichita Falls, Barbara Robinson of Covington, Ga.; two nephews and five nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife, Yoshi Sloan, his parents and a brother Edward Sloan. Services will be at 8:40 a.m., April 13 at the Southern Nevada Veterans Cemetery in Boulder City. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Nathan Adelson Hospice. (04/05/2009) |
