Annual Pahrump clean-up on the way

The ninth annual Pahrump Town Clean Up will be held Saturday, April 25.

It's that time of year to get out and do some spring cleaning for your community, said organizer Patricia Cox.

"It takes the whole community to get involved and make a difference," she said. "We clean over 98 miles of roadways. This is accomplished with volunteers chipping in and cleaning one mile of road. It normally takes about one hour of your time. This is a once-a-year event for everyone to pitch in and make our community clean."

All who take part will be assigned locations to clean. If a volunteer has an area he or she specifically wishes to clean, call the chamber of commerce at 775-727-5800, or you can visit the office in the Nevada State Bank building on Highway 160.

"We normally focus on major section-line roads that get heavy use," said Cox, "because that is normally where most of the trash is. Call today and sign up with how many that will be in your party to help you clean.

"We are also encouraging you to take advantage of the big dumpsters that will be placed in three sections of town: Highway 160 and Basin Avenue at the Community Center, Gamebird and Homestead, and Mesquite and Blagg."

Individuals cleaning their own yards are encouraged to make use of the dumpsters so they won't have to travel to the town landfill to unload all their large items.

Orange trash bags, vests, water and safety forms may be picked up at Honeysuckle Park. Clean up will begin at 7 a.m. and last until noon. There will be coffee and doughnuts to help start off the morning.

"We will have safety forms to fill out, listing all the items that we highly recommend you not touch," said Cox. "No children under age 18 are allowed on Highways 372 and 160. We will place families in areas that have less traffic and where the speed limit is reduced for their safety.

"We are asking everyone to place the orange trash bags on the side of the road at least six feet from the pavement. We need enough room for the dump trucks to safely pull off the road and pick up the trash bags."

Among the many who make the effort a success is Pahrump Valley Disposal, which donates time, trucks, dumpsters and gas to pick up the bags, said Cox. The state Department of Transportation is also one of our partners which is donating all the trash bags and vests.

"Drivers, please watch out and drive safely," said Cox. "We will have many signs out along the highway that will read, 'Warning, men at work.' Please pay attention and respect those volunteers who are cleaning our community by driving slowly."

Volunteers should wear walking shoes, gloves, hats and sunscreen. While water will be provided, extra water will always be a good idea to ensure proper hydration. A variety of awards will be handed out after the event.
