Playing in optimum weather conditions, the Las Vegas Centennial and Palo Verde boys were dominant on the first day of the 19th Pahrump Valley Invitational Golf tournament, Monday at Mountain Falls.

With none of its starters finishing in the 80s, the Centennial Blue team shot a tournament 18-hole record 304 to take a three-stroke lead over Palo Verde Green, led by a record one-under par 71 by Kyle Melchiorre on the usually wind-whipped 6,600-yard Mountain Falls.

Warm temperatures and relative calm greeted the 100 boys from 17 Nevada, California, Idaho and Arizona high schools. The tournament concluded Tuesday, with team and individual honors at stake in another 18-hole round.

Finishing at 320 was the Bishop Gorman Blue team, paced by Connor Morris's 76.

Pahrump Valley was fourth with 326, including Daniel Shimakawa's 76 and Shane Lindemann's 78. The Trojans' lineup included Dorian Patel (80) and Josh Spradlin (93). Elliott Owens, who usually plays the No. 2 spot, was at the Masters and did not compete.

Completing the Championship or Gold Flight Tuesday were Arbor View and Bonanza, tied for fifth with 327s.

The Silver Flight was led by Sierra Vista, with 336. Two shots back were Palo Verde Silver and Tehachapi (Calif.) and fourth with 344 was Boulder City. Centennial Navy and Soda Springs (Idaho) had 345 and 350, respectively.

Four teams were in contention for the Maroon Flight title, including Mesquite Virgin Valley, Bishop Gorman Orange, Sedona (Ariz.) Red Rock and Pahrump Valley Maroon. Because some players were disqualified or had other problems, Desert Oasis, San Diego Mater Dei and Phoenix Northwest Christian will not be eligible for team awards.

Tonopah had three players entered, with Denver Otteson shooting an 88 for the Muckers.

Since 2004, the tournament has been played exclusively at Mountain Falls, The Lakeview Executive course and Willow Creek were the main courses used for the tournament which began in 1989. Mountain Falls was included in the format for the first time in 2003, when the tournament played out at 54 holes.
