GEORGE WILL

'Green' bulbs not as convenient as billed
WASHINGTON -- "Fervently" is how America will henceforth engage in talks on global warming. So said the president's climate change negotiator Sunday in Germany, at a U.N. conference on reducing carbon emissions. This vow was fervently applauded by conferees welcoming the end of what AP's news story called the Bush administration's "eight years of obdurate participation" in climate talks.

Reverse Card-Check: Big Labor's Rhyolite Express?
A good friend recently compared the fate of a Nevada ghost-town to organized labor's Holy Grail, the obscenely misnamed Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA). This piece of federal legislation, commonly referred to as "card-check," would eliminate secret ballot elections in union organizing campaigns. Instead, union agitators would only need to coerce, threaten or intimidate a majority of workers into signing "cards" saying they wanted union representation.

Making sausage of 'card-check'
My curious little state of Arkansas, conservative and nominally Democratic, is something of a ground zero in the raging battle between management and labor over whether to allow unions to be formed by the filing of employee cards.

Letters to the Editor

Time to get taxes done ... tomorrow
Mid-April, or the deadline for filing 2008 taxes, is swiftly approaching. Americans can be divided into three distinct groups at this juncture: those who did their taxes early and already received their refund; those who did their taxes early and are waiting until 11:59 p.m., on April 15 before dropping what they owe in the slot at the post office; and the rest of us who haven't yet begun.
