Fast Track program

The Nye County adult education program is offering GED testing and courses.

The GED test can be used to waive English, math, science and social studies electives depending on test scores.

Nevada High School Proficiency Exams with passing scores are a prerequisite, and the adult education offers those classes as well.

Prostate cancer support

The Pahrump chapter of US-TOO, an international prostate cancer support group met for the first time Jan. 22.

The mission is to communicate timely and reliable information to enable informed choices regarding the detection and treatment of prostate cancer.

The support group meets the fourth Thursday of the month except November and December holidays 5-6:30 p.m. in the Pahrump Community Library.

Free tax return service

Pahrump tax aides are IRS trained counselors offering free tax return services beginning 9-3:30 p.m., every Wednesday and Saturday, through April 22, at the Bob Ruud Community Center, Room B.

The service is open to young, low income taxpayers and seniors who may qualify for Earned Income Credit and are not receiving it.

A handicap or the working-hour challenged may make other arrangements by appointment only. Appointments may be made by calling 727-4258 and leaving a name and phone number twice, or via e-mail at fordpayne@juno.com.

VFW

The VFW hosts a swap meet the second and fourth Saturday of each month 9-4 p.m. on the VFW grounds. The third Saturday at 11 a.m., VFW Ladies Auxiliary at 1 p.m.

Saturday -- darts;

Women support groups

No To Abuse is offering two support groups for women: A support group for women who have experienced domestic violence meets from 1-3 p.m. on Tuesdays and 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.

A support group for women who have experienced domestic violence or armed forces related trauma will meet from 1-3 p.m. on Thursdays.

Meetings will be held at No to Abuse, 621 S. Blagg Road.

West Star Ranch

The West Star Ranch Old Dog Rescue Thrift Store is open 10-3 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, 780 Manse Road.

Notice to veterans

Those serving in the military from April 6, 1917 to the present have an office in Pahrump and Tonopah to take advantage of earned military benefits including: compensation, pension, education and death and burial benefits.

The Pahrump office is located in JobConnect in a trailer at the town annex complex on Highway 160.

Ken Shockley and his staff work full time to assist in doing all they can to help veterans take advantage of their earned benefits.

The hours are 8-5 p.m. at the office locations or call 537-2323.

Those unable to come to the office may get a home visit to get the ball rolling.

Fish Fry

Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church will host a fish fry 4-7 p.m. each Friday through April 3, 781 E. Gamebird Road.

Fried and baked fish dinners are $7.

They will also have fish tacos, fish taco dinners, clam chowder and homemade desserts.

EAA pancake breakfast

The Experimental Aircraft Association chapter 1160 will hold the annual pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. April 4, in Dennis Paulsen's hangar at the east end of Sky Place on the Calvada Aeropark.

Relay for Life fundraiser

The High Desert Linedancers will host an Easter dinner celebration starting at 6 p.m., April 3 at the Pahrump Nugget. There will be an Easter basket auction, chance drawings, a silent auction and live entertainment.

Filet mignon will be served and semi-formal dress is requested.

Tickets are $60 per person and are available at the chamber of commerce.

All proceeds go to Relay For Life.

Legal services

The Family Resource Center has partnered with Nevada Legal Services to provide low income residents with a virtual attorney service.

At the Family Resource Center office, personal meetings to speak to an attorney regarding civil issues is available.

All necessary forms and assistance in completing them is provided by Nevada Legal Services attorneys.

DAV relocated

The Disabled American Veterans service officer, Reggie Knight, has relocated his offices to Desert View Hospital, 360 S. Lola Lane. The hours remain the same.

Computer Users meet

The Pahrump Computer Users will meet at 1 p.m. April 6 in the large meeting room of the library.

Mike Irwin will present the new "Windows 7" and Don will summarize programs available from Google.

Ample parking is provided in the rear of the library and is the preferred parking area. Handicapped parking is still in the front.

New coin club meets

A recently formed coin club in Pahrump will meet at 10 a.m., April 4 in the UNR Cooperative Extension Office, corner of Dandelion Street and Calvada Boulevard.

The meeting is open to anyone interested in coins, paper money, tokens, medals, and ancient or gold coins.

Regular meetings will be the first Saturday of each month.

Relay For Life fundraiser

Valley Electric Association will have a yard sale as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life beginning at 7 a.m. April 4 in front of the main building, 800 E. Highway 372.

VEA employees will be accepting donations and selling gently used items.

Free radon test kits

Radon, the number one cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, is a cancer-causing radioactive gas.

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Office and the Nevada State Health Division are offering free testing kits.

The kits will be available for a limited time.

Scout uniforms and equipment

Pahrump has a number of boys ages 7-16 interested in scouting but need uniforms and gear. Donations of camping equipment and uniforms are appreciated.

Adult literacy

The Pahrump Community Library has a sufficient number of literacy tutors and is ready for students.

CPR and first aid classes

The Pahrump Valley Fire Rescue Services will hold CPR and first aid classes 6-9 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday and Wednesday of each month.

The cost is $20 each class and class size is limited.

"The Ladies Network: Making a Difference," would like to meet U.S. military active soldiers and their families, to find out more about supporting the troops.

Meet the Ombudsman

LAS VEGAS -- The real estate division has scheduled "Meet the Ombudsman" event at 11 a.m. April 17 in the Pahrump Senior Center.

Sessions last for about two hours.

The event is designed to help homeowners association residents understand their rights and responsibilities and the role of the Nevada Office of the Ombudsman in resolving disputes.

Ombudsman Lindsay Waite and education officer, Nick Haley will present information on services.

HOA residents will learn how to conduct business and be able to ask questions.

This is the largest trade show in rural Southern Nevada.

PAVED free workshop

PAVED will sponsor a free workshop 1-3 p.m. April 2 in the Pahrump Town Annex next to the community pool.

This is a financial workshop geared to understanding the stimulus package enacted by President Obama to help small businesses.

The SBA program is designed to help bussiness' grow and succeed. The government guarantees up to 90 percent of the loan amount and subsidized the SBA fees.

The new changes have made it easier for business owners to get the capital they need.

Master Gardener tree delivery

The University of Nevada Cooperative Master Gardeners will sponsor a delivery of forestry plant material 8 a.m.-noon, April 18 at the offices, 1651 E. Calvada Blvd.

CASA recruiting volunteers

The newly formed 5th Judicial District Court appointed special advocates for neglected and abused children is accepting applications for volunteers to work with children within the court system.

A CASA volunteer will work directly with the children, schools, parents (biological and foster) and Social Services to determine their bests interests and help the court in deciding permanent placement.

Volunteers must pass a background check and provide CASA with the minimum of a two-year commitment.

Retired/senior program

The Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteers need help.

This program enables the elderly to stay in their homes by assisting with daily maintenance such as shopping, medical appointments, etc.

RSVP reimburses volunteers 30 cents per mile up to $20 per month and carries worker's compensation and excess auto liability on all volunteers.

Additionally, volunteers receive training, annual seminar education and appreciation award dinners.

SCORE, counselors to America's small businesses, is ready to help start individual businesses and help businesses with problems.

This is a stand alone project not affiliated with any other project or organization. All photos taken to Wal-Mart will stay at Wal-Mart.
