PV SHINES Western girls in charge at LVI

The present-day power in Class 4-A girls' track -- Western -- was showcased Saturday in the Las Vegas Invitational, at Del Sol High School. Friday, the future -- Pahrump Valley -- was glimpsed, when Trojan freshmen and sophomores competed in one of the more prestigous track meets contested in Nevada. Led by Female Track Athlete of the Meet Unique Conner, Western's Warriors won the 400-, 800- and 1,600-meter relays and took every individual running event from the 100 to the 800. Conner won the 200 (25.35 seconds) and 400 (56.3), with Tiarra Tyler taking the 100 (12.1) and Anasherae Devine the 800 (2:20.7). Conner's time of 56.3 seconds was a meet record and more than three seconds ahead of Pitts' runner-up time (59.62). Pahrump Valley's Ashley Rencher won the shot put, with a heave of 42 feet. 2 1/2 inches on her final throw giving her the win. Rencher was second in the discus at 120-11. In the frosh-soph meet Friday, Pahrump Valley's: * Freshman Megan Hamrick won the shot put at 35-9 1/4 and the discus at 78-7; * Sophomore Ashley Lindgren was second in the long jump at 14-7 1/2 and was first in the 400 at 1:01.8; * Freshman Melissa Ewing won the 100-meter hurdles in 0:18.74; * Freshman Kayla Foster was second in the high jump at 4-7; * Freshman Taylor McJunkin was sixth in the 400 in 1:05.78 and second in the long jump at 14-0; * Pahrump Valley's girls' 4x100 team was fourth in 0:54.99, while the 4x200 quartet was fourth in 1:57.08. Freshman Atiba Hughes was first in the boys' freshman high jump at 5-6 and second in the long jump at 18-3. Shane Ervine was fourth at 17-7 3/4. The boys' 4x200 team was third in 1:40.59. The Trojans will next compete in the Palo Verde Spring Break Bash Tuesday, starting at 9 a.m. On April 11, Pahrump Valley will compete in the UNLV Invitational. In the Las Vegas meet, Chaparral boys senior Joel Hotchkins won the 100 (10.74) and long jump (22 feet, 61/2 inches) and was second in the 200. Legacy freshman Avione Allgood won Outstanding Female Field Athlete for winning the discus at 136-10. She was second in the shot put at 41-0. Green Valley senior Bryan Artmann took Outstanding Male Field Athlete with a winning mark of 14-6 in the pole vault -- more than a foot ahead of the runner-up. Brandon Chambers of Mira Mesa (Calif.) set meet records in the 110 hurdles (14.72) and 300 hurdles (39.19) to take Outstanding Male Track Athlete. Girls double-winners included Arbor View sophomore Candice McFarland (100 hurdles in 15.01, 300 hurdles in 46.68) and Foothill senior Leah Leedy (1,500 in 5:04.16 and 3,000 in 10:46.35). Leedy set a meet record in the 3,000. Liberty boys junior Al Galan took the open mile (4:41.73) and 3,000 (9:13.02). |
