Bones & Brew Cook-off The Pahrump Elks will host the Bones & Brew Cook-off Oct. 25 at the lodge, 2220 Basin Road, one mile east of Highway 160. There will be food, a no-host bar, games, entertainment, door prizes and an awards presentation. The event is open to the public. Contest rules and applications are available at the lodge or by calling Ed, 727-9823. Library fall reading program Pahrump Community Library's fall reading program, "Dino Tails," will begin Oct. 15. Classes are Tiny Dinos (ages 2-3), Wednesdays 9:15-9:45 a.m. (parent must accompany child); T-rex Tails (ages 4-5), Wednesdays 10-10:45 a.m.; Story Osaurus (ages 6-12), Wednesdays 3:30-4:30 p.m.; and Teens (fifth grade and up), Thursdays 3-4 p.m. There is no fee to attend the program and no prior sign up necessary. Fundraiser for the Duck Pond NyE Communities Coalition Youth Organization is holding a fundraiser for the Calvada Duck Pond. Adopt-a-Duck trading cards are available from youth group members at a minimum donation of $10 per card. There are 10 different cards to collect. Proceeds will be used for supplies and improvements for the duck pond. Trading cards are available at the NyE Communities Coalition office, 2280 E. Calvada Blvd, Suite 103. Coat donations Kaye's Allstate Insurance located in the Albertson's Shopping Center is accepting slightly used and new coats for the Pahrump Kiwanis Club to provide for our community needs. Coats may be dropped at the office from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday from Sept. 15 through Nov. 15. Shakespeare Made Simple will be held 10 a.m.-noon the 3rd Saturday of each month, Tuesdays 4-6 p.m., is Shakespeare Readers' Theatre. Both are free and open to all ages. There will be no movie day in September due to the Fall Festival. Movies will resume in October. Flu shot clinics The Bureau of Community Health will hold walk-in flu shot clinics 1-7 p.m. Sept. 24; 9-4 p.m. Sept. 29; 8:30-4 p.m. Oct. 2; 8:30-12:30 p.m. Oct. 3; 8:30-4 p.m. Oct. 6; 8:30-4 p.m. Oct. 13; and 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-4 p.m. Oct. 22 at the clinic, 250 N. Highway 160, Suite 6. The flu shot is offered to adults only. Medicare or Medicaid cards are accepted, Senior Dimensions is accepted as well. The cost to all others is $20 cash or check. Job Fair postponed Due to the current slow economy and decreased consumer spending, many employers are not hiring new employees. Therefore, the Pahrump Welfare Office has postponed the annual job fair scheduled for Sept. 25 at the Pahrump Nugget. The event will be rescheduled at a later date when timing will benefit both employers and those seeking employment. Meet and greet for Jill Derby Jill Derby, Democratic candidate for Congress will hold a meet and greet 4-7 p.m. Sept. 26 at K-7 Pizza, 6050 Thousandaire Blvd. Admission is free. VFW in October The VFW hosts a swap meet the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month 7-3 p.m. on the VFW grounds. Reservations for a spot are $7 if you bring your own table and $10 if you rent one from the VFW. There is free parking and the Marine Corps League are serving up the hotdogs and chips for $1.50. The American Legion, Riders and Auxiliary meets on the 3rd Thursday of the month 6-7 p.m. The MOC/MOCA Cooties meet on the 3rd Saturday at 11 a.m., followed by the VFW Ladies Auxiliary at 1 p.m. Tuesday -- DAV meeting/ Auxiliary; Wednesday -- poker, noon; Friday -- dinner, 5-7 p.m. Check the menu at 727-6072.
