Cheerleader imposter is busted for ID theftTHE ASSOCIATED PRESS
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The mother of a 15 year-old Pahrump Valley High School student was arrested in Green Bay, Wis., last week for felony identity theft, after she enrolled in high school posing as her daughter, the Associated Press reported. Wendy Brown, 33, enrolled in Ashwaubenon High School posing as her daughter back in Pahrump and joined the cheerleading team. Brown supposedly attended cheerleading practices before school started, was given a locker and went to a pool party at the coach's house, the AP reported. High school employee Kim Demeny told authorities Brown seemed timid, told her she was not good in math and cried when she talked about moving from Pahrump Valley High School. The police complaint mentioned Brown's motive: "The defendant stated she wanted to get her high school degree and be a cheerleader because she had no childhood and was trying to regain a part of her life she missed." A school liasion officer started investigating when Brown showed up late for classes. Ashwaubenon High School Assistant Principal Dirk Ribbins later learned the girl's name Brown was using was the name of her daughter, who is enrolled at Pahrump Valley High School. The suspect's daughter is staying with her grandmother in Pahrump. Brown has a history of identity theft crimes, the complaint said. The AP also reported that a $134.50 check Brown gave to the cheerleading coach for her uniform bounced. Bond was set at $8,000 last Friday. Brown faces up to six years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted. The odd story was widely printed in newspapers around the country from Boston, Mass., to Spokane, Wash., to Melbourne, Fla. |
