FISHING
QUAGGA REMINDER: NDOW is asking boaters to take the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of quagga mussels from the Colorado River system to other waters. Thoroughly clean, drain and dry your boat, trailer and towing vessel before traveling to another water. EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR Fishing generally picks up as the daytime temperatures start to cool down. Worms combined with mini marshmallows or floating baits will keep your bait out of the weeds. You may need to adjust the length of your leader. Trout will cruise the edge of weed beds or other structure. A one-fly tournament will be held here on Sept. 20. For information call 1-775-962-5103. ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR Fishing pressure is low and so is the water. Anglers will want to fish in the deep water near the dam. LAKE MEAD Smallmouth bass are really coming on at Lake Mead. The scrappy fish accounted for more than 200 of the 900 fish caught during the recent WON Bass tournament. The rest were largemouth bass. Small striped bass continue to hit top-water baits and lures jigged below the surface in the Vegas Bay arm. Boils are being seen along the Boulder Beach area. Anglers are catching lots of small stripers though an eight-pounder gave one angler some rod-bending fun. Shore anglers are catching some fish though boaters are fairing somewhat better. LAKE MOHAVE An AC Plug has been the go-to hardware boaters who have reeled in a 26-, 19- and 15-pound striped bass south of Willow Beach during the past week. Smaller fish have been taking Rapala's. Boaters and shore anglers alike are catching stocked rainbow trout though fishing is a little sluggish. PowerBait, live worms, Rooster Tails and other spinners are taking the fish. Morning hours are best. Fishing is still good from shore and from boats near Cottonwood Cove. Stripers and catfish are taking cut bait. Trolling is producing the bigger fish while stillfishing is producing the most fish. Largemouth bass are hitting top-water and shallow diving lures in the early morning and late afternoon hours. Despite the good fishing, angler numbers have dropped sharply. LAUGHLIN Though the fish are mostly small, striped bass are hitting cut anchovies below Davis Dam. Anglers are catching some largemouth bass along the Colorado River. Above the dam on Lake Mohave, smallies and largemouth are both active. WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA A pair of Las Vegas anglers braved weedy conditions and was rewarded with fast action for largemouth bass. Tossing spinner baits into open pockets of water netted the pair a 50-fish day. Trout fishing is slow. Heavy weeds also have made fishing difficult for shore anglers along the dams. Look for open water and use rigs that will keep your bait out of the weeds as much as possible. Cold Springs was stocked with rainbows in late August. URBAN PONDS As is typical for late summer, fishing has slowed down at the urban ponds. That doesn't mean fish can't be caught, it just means you'll be doing more fishing than catching. Catfish will take shrimp, night crawlers or stink baits. Fishing should pickup as nighttime temperatures cool down and water temperatures follow suit. Catfish will be stocked again the week of Sept. 15. |
