PREP FOOTBALL Trojans win, but D'backs are a threat
By DON McDERMOTT
Two football teams in transition -- Pahrump Valley and Las Vegas Mountain View Christian -- battled in the 2008 opener for both teams Saturday, on the Saints' field. That the Trojans prevailed 23-18 was a testimony to their never-give-up attitude, as well as the Saints' inability to shut down PVHS's offense in the final quarter. The Trojans outscored the Saints 14-0, getting two short-yardage touchdowns from senior fullback Ande Floyd in the final eight minutes -- the last with 1:09 left -- to win their season opener and end a two-year, 10-game winless streak. The transitions? * Pahrump Valley has moved from the Southern Nevada Class 3-A League into the 4-A Sunset Region Southwest Division. * The Trojans were debuting for a new head coach (the school's 12th in 36 years), Leo Verzilli. He and his offensive coordinator, Joe Clayton, installed the Wing-T, a storied scheme which features all of the bells and whistles -- multiple shifts, men in motion and options. Floyd, running from the deep set, carried 17 times for 144 yards and three touchdowns. The senior scored on runs of 1, 3 and 5 yards -- the clincher coming with 1:09 remaining. * Mountain View was a Class A eight-man football power for several years; in the 2007 season, the Saints were the only team to defeat state champion Tonopah during the regular season, prevailing 16-0 at home. Veteran coach Raymond LeBoeuf had to add three players to his offensive scheme and did it the easy way, in a sense. The Saints ran out of trips sets, putting those three players out wide in a stack to the weak side in the open field, then close to the tight end when Mountain View was in the red zone. Most of the offensive plays the Saints ran were out of the shotgun formation that was so effective in eight-man football the previous four seasons. Mountain View generated 124 yards rushing and 177 passing, as Raymond Velardi completed 10 of 16 passes, including one touchdown. But Mountain View's defense tired badly in the fourth quarter and they couldn't sustain an 18-9 lead. The key play came with less than three minutes left when Floyd broke away for a 58-yard gain deep into Saints' territory. Pahrump Valley plays its home opener Friday against another team in transition. Desert Oasis, a new high school in southwestern Las Vegas, has several players from the Sierra Vista district, but has no seniors. The Diamondbacks play a mixed schedule, including four games against Southern Nevada Class 3-A teams. They lost their opener, 23-0, to Class 2-A The Meadows. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Friday, with the game preceded by a tailgate party on campus. The Trojans play at Las Vegas Faith Lutheran Sept. 12, before beginning their inaugural Class 4-A campaign at Bonanza Sept. 19. DESERT OASIS Coach: Matt Jenkins, first year. Record: First year for school; no returning starters Division: Independent. Nickname: Diamondbacks Top players: Roycen Shepherd, junior linebacker; Zach Knudson, junior linebacker; Michael DeMauro, junior defensive tackle; Thomas Whitney, junior strong safety; C. J. Hunt, junior running back; Elijah Mitchell, junior wide receiver; Dominique Banks, junior fullback; Cameron Jefferson, junior tight end. The Diamondbacks will not play a Sunset Region Southwest Division Class 4-A football game this fall; instead, they will meet either Class 3-A or 2-A varsity or 4-A JV teams. The Pahrump Valley game will not count in the division standings. 2008 Schedule 0 (Class 2-A) Las Vegas The Meadows 23 Friday -- At Pahrump Valley, 7 p.m. Sept. 12 -- Las Vegas Junior Varsity, 7 p.m. Sept. 19 -- At (Class 3-A) Mesquite Virgin Valley, 7 p.m. Sept. 26 -- (Class 3-A) Las Vegas Faith Lutheran, 7 p.m. Oct. 3 -- Open date.
