RENO -- Pahrump Valley's young and untested girls' soccer team got an idea of what playing Class 4-A opponents will be like next season.

Competing in the eighth annual Howell Memorial Tournament at Galena High School here, PVHS lost 5-1 to the host Grizzlies, 3-0 to Sparks Spanish Springs and 5-1 to Douglas Minden.

Angelica Musumeci scored against Galena, while Melissa Ewing got the goal against Douglas, which went on to win the title. The Tigers, 5-0, defeated South Tahoe 4-1 in the finals Saturday afternoon.

South Tahoe got to the finals by beating Reno, Zephyr Cove Whittell, North Tahoe and Truckee (Calif.).

Pahrump Valley (0-1) plays at Mesquite Virgin Valley in a non-league game, starting at 2:30 p.m.

The Lady Trojans' home and 3-A league opener will be Tuesday against Overton Moapa Valley; game time is 2:30 p.m.

Pahrump Valley will play one more season in Class 3-A, while the Clark County School District, the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association and lawyers decide when Southern Nevada Class 4-A girls will play in 2009-2010.

Class 4-A girls in southern Nevada compete in the winter this school year. The 4-A boys are in action this fall.

Pahrump Valley's boys, coached by Gene Smith, launch their first season in 4-A Thursday at Las Vegas Centennial, starting at 3 p.m.

The Trojans are 1-0, having earned a win by forfeit against Henderson Liberty, which had to withdraw from a game scheduled in Pahrump Tuesday. PVHS also missed out on playing at least three games in the JZ3 tournament at Bishop Gorman. That event was canceled by the Gaels because the CCSD did not arrange for buses for opposing Las Vegas schools entered in the event.

The Trojans' first Sunset Region Southwest Division game will be at Clark Monday (3 p.m.). PVHS is at Durango for their division opener Sept. 10 and on Sept. 13, the Trojans will be at home against Southwest rival Sierra Vista (9 a.m.).
