Nye County District Attorney Bob Beckett entered a plea of not guilty to a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol in Barstow (Calif.) Superior Court Tuesday.

Beckett was arrested for DUI about 1:30 p.m. on Father's Day, June 15, on Highway 127 near Baker, Calif., after blowing a 0.10 blood alcohol reading on a breathalyzer test. The legal limit for intoxication is 0.08.

That was after he rolled over his personal van. Earlier that day, Beckett rolled a county-owned sport utility vehicle on the same highway farther north, near Shoshone, Calif.

Beckett's attorney is Don Chairez, a former Clark County district judge who ran for a seat on the Nevada Supreme court this year.

A pre-trail conference on Beckett's case has been set for 9 a.m., Oct. 3, in Department B-2 of Barstow Superior Court.

During a previous interview with the Pahrump Valley Times, Beckett said he was traveling to visit his family in California. He visited a neurologist after the accidents.

In the July 23 Pahrump Valley Times, Beckett said the accidents could have been partially due to medical reasons, without elaborating.

Beckett has already paid the price in his election campaign for 5th District judge, Department 1. He finished last in a three-way race, winning only 838 votes, or 14 percent of the total in the Aug. 12 primary.

The front-runner, incumbent 5th District Judge John Davis, tallied 3,190 votes, or 54 percent of the total.

Beckett was unavailable for comment by press time Tuesday.
