Grandma needed

Nevada Outreach Training Organization is seeking a volunteer "grandma" to work in the shelter.

Qualifications include a lot of free time, must love kids and be a good listener, must be able to sleep at the shelter 2-3 nights a week.

She can share baking and cooking skills with the mothers and might teach knitting or crocheting or other crafts. Bilingual is helpful as is a knowledge of first aid.

Scheduled days will be 5-8 p.m. Training will be provided.

Donations needed

Tonja Tennant is a breast cancer survivor who is currently in debt over $14,000 due to bills for her surgery. She will be having chemotherapy and still supporting two children including one approaching college age.

R.S.E.A. O-Mok-See

Rising Star Equestrian Association, a N.P.O., is offering another O-Mok-See on Saturday, Sept. 6, at the McCullough Arena.

Sign-ups start at 6 p.m. and the cost is $10 per entry for members of R.S.E.A. It is $15 for non-members.

They will offer time onlys for 15 minutes prior to each event for $1 each ride.

Adult literacy

The Pahrump Community Library has a sufficient number of literacy tutors and is ready for students.

Eastern Star yard sale

Stardust chapter No. 32 of Eastern Star will have a yard sale 8-2 p.m. Sept. 5 and 6 at 1901 Isaac St., off Leslie Street north of Basin Avenue.

There will be clothes, furniture, appliances, books and other items.

Free computer instruction is available for beginning-level computer users are Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Sign-up in person available at the library.

Shakespeare Made Simple will be held 10 a.m.-noon the 3rd Saturday of each month,

There will be a collage contest with prizes. No unaccompanied children under 10.

There will be no movie day in September due to the Fall Festival. Movies will resume in October.

DAR meets

The Pahrump Springs chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will hold a monthly meeting at 10 a.m. Sept. 10 in the Pahrump Community Library.

Beginning Sept. 15 the Amargosa Public Library will be open 9-6 p.m. Monday and Thursday, 8-4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and 8-2 p.m. Saturday.

Girl Scouts open registration

Pahrump Girl Scouts will hold open registration for all girls grades K-5 and adult volunteers at 6 p.m. Sept. 15 in the multi-purpose room at Manse Elementary and 6 p.m. Sept. 16 in the multipurpose room at Floyd Elementary.

Girls can enjoy Girl Scout activities while adults attend a short informal meeting.

Registrations will be accepted at the events

Membership is $10 for both girls and adults.

Scholarships for financial hardships are available and no girl is denied based on inability to pay.

Any girl may attend these events; attending Manse or Floyd Elementary is not a requirement.

The Pahrump Arts Council will hold the 2nd annual Evening of Art &Wine 7-10 p.m. Sept. 4 at the Charleston Peak RV Park clubhouse at the winery.

Missed economic stimulus package

During the Federal Income Tax season, the Pahrump Tax Aid group offered free tax service to people of the community.

They have been advised that many persons in the Pahrump area are eligible for the ESP, but have not filed.

The Pahrump Tax Aides will offer services to correct this on Friday, Sept. 5 at the Bob Ruud Community Center.

Fish Fry

Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church will have a fish fry 4-7 p.m. Sept. 5 at the parish hall, 781 E. Gamebird Road.

The menu includes a baked or fried fish dinner with fries and coleslaw and punch or coffee for $7. A fish taco dinner including fries and two tacos will be $6. Single fish tacos and clam chowder are $2 each. Desserts will be $1.

Beer, wine and soda will be available.

Rummage sale

Our Lady of the Valley will hold a rummage sale with lots of Christmas items 8-4 p.m. Sept. 12 and 13 at the church, 781 E. Gamebird Road.

Pahrump Film Festival

The 2nd annual Pahrump Film Festival will be held Sept. 6 at Red Sky BBQ.

Two new movies will premiere: "Demon Haunt" by Ted V. Mikels and "Dorks on the Moon" by Harvey Caplan.

EAA chapter 1160 meets

Experimental Aircraft Association chapter 1160 will hold a monthly meeting at 10 a.m. Sept. 6 in Phil Shallenberger's hangar, corner of Jet Place and Helicopter Drive in the Calvada Aeropark.

The program will feature a talk by Jeff Bobek, a certified flight instructor, on the subject of stalls and spins.

7th annual Car and Truck Show

Tumbleweed Tavern and Horizon Markets will sponsor the 7th annual Car and Truck Show Sept. 13.

Last minute registration begins at 8 a.m.

There will be oldies music with a live DJ, raffles, vehicle judging and an awards presentation.

TheUnClub Boys, Pahrump Model As and Nye County Public Auction will sponsor a swap meet 6-2 p.m. Sept. 20 at the auction house, 800 S. Margaret St.

There will be a swap meet, hot rods, collector cars and motorcycle parts and accessories.

Admission is $3 and children under 12 get in free.

Those wanting to reserve a swap space, the cost is $15. To register a car for sale, the cost is $10.

Mark Chatterton from the Las Vegas Bureau of Land Management will be on hand for a discussion of the concerns and needs of prospectors in southern Nye County and what plans the BLM has for the future.

Shows are held Saturdays at McCullough Arena.

Awards will go to first place, ribbons will go to 1st through 5th.

High point for the day will be awarded and youth high point at year-end. PAC and OCAP approved.
