Call 751-5898 for more information and to set appointments or register for classes. Domestic violence vigil October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. The Interfaith Domestic Violence Taskforce and No To Abuse will sponsor a candlelight vigil at 7 p.m. Oct. 29 at Pahrump Family Mortuary, 4551 Vicki Ann Road. The purpose is to celebrate those who have survived domestic violence and remember those who have died because of it. Desert View flu clinics Desert View Hospital will sponsor the 2nd annual flu clinic: Oct. 29 -- 4-7 p.m. The walk-in clinics will be held in the main lobby of the hospital, 360 S. Lola Lane. It will be free for Medicare Part B recipients; however participants may not be a part of any Medicare Advantage program such as Senior Dimensions, Secure Horizons, Aetna, etc. The fee will be $20 for the public. Call 751-7500 for more information. Library fall reading program Pahrump Community Library's fall reading program, "Dino Tails," began Oct. 15. Classes are Tiny Dinos (ages 2-3), Wednesdays 9:15-9:45 a.m. (parent must accompany child); T-rex Tails (ages 4-5), Wednesdays 10-10:45 a.m.; Story Osaurus (ages 6-12), Wednesdays 3:30-4:30 p.m.; and Teens (fifth grade and up), Thursdays 3-4 p.m. There is no fee to attend the program and no prior sign up necessary. EAA Eagles Rally The Pahrump chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association will host its fourth Young Eagles Rally 9-1 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Calvada Aeropark, corner of Simpkins Road and Highway 160. The purpose is to give children 8-17 free airplane rides in the local area. Last year 93 kids rode. Parents or legal guardians must accompany the child to the airport and remain until their child has flown. Please bring chairs. New veteran's hospital video There will be a video presentation concerning the new veteran's hospital under construction in Las Vegas at 11 a.m. Oct. 29 at the VFW, 4651 Homestead Road. All veterans and their spouses are invited. Friends of the Library The Pahrump Friends of the Library will have their monthly meeting 9:15 a.m. Nov. 1 in the conference room at the library. Following the meeting, Roxanne Blum will speak on economics, money and mortgages followed by Carlton McCaslin talking about the Shadow Mountain Players. Genealogical Society meets The Pahrump Genealogical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 6 in the multi-purpose room of the LDS Church, corner of Wilson Road and West Street. The business meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. with social time to follow. The program will be wedding reminiscense, wedding memorabilia (one member is bringing gowns from three generations) and wedding stories -- humorous and otherwise. This is a member-sharing program. Call Edna Goodwin, 751-2175 for more information. 4-H enrollment October is open enrollment month for the UNC Cooperative Extension's Southern Nye County 4-H Club for youth ages 5-19 years old. Clogging, square dancing, cheerleading, knitting, leather craft, cooking, small engines, rock and fossils, jewelry making, quilting, reptiles, livestock, dog agility, Global Positioning Systems, dairy goat, horse, Krazy Kritters, Junior Master Gardeners and much more are offered through 4-H. Notice to veterans Those serving in the military from April 6, 1917 to the present have an office in Pahrump to take advantage of earned military benefits including: compensation, pension, education and death and burial benefits. The office is located in JobConnect in the Calvada Eye, Building A. Ken Shockley and his staff work full time to assist in doing all they can to help veterans take advantage of their earned benefits. The hours are 8-5 p.m. at the office location or call 537-2323. Those unable to come to the office may get a home visit to get the ball rolling. Legal services The Family Resource Center has partnered with Nevada Legal Services to provide low-income residents with a virtual attorney service. At the Family Resource Center office, personal meetings to speak to an attorney regarding civil issues is available. Giant rummage sale Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church will hold their quarterly rummage sale 8-1 p.m. Nov. 7 at the church, 1300 E. Highway 372. Spaghetti dinner fundraiser The Youth Groups of Pahrump will hold a spaghetti dinner for the family of Preston Dockter at 4 p.m. Nov. 2 in the Bob Ruud Community Center. O-Mok-See Rising Star Equestrian Association, a N.P.O., is offering another O-Mok-See at 9 a.m. Nov. 1 in the McCullough Arena. The cost is $10 per entry for members and $15 for non-members. They will be promoting the sale with advertising stating "see other yard sales on the block too." If you live in the vicinity of the Lion's sale, use this time to hold a yard sale of your own. Moose Lodge sale Moose Lodge 808 will hold a white elephant sale 9-5 p.m., Oct. 24 and 25 at the intersection of Second and Center streets. A bake sale will also be held with the proceeds going to benefit the Preston Dockter family. Model train meeting The Pahrump Model Train Enthusiasts will meet at 9 a.m. Oct. 25 at the United Methodist Church, 1300 E. Highway 372. Join the group too see what they are about. Schedule The Pahrump Open Schooling Show date will be Oct. 25, 9 a.m. Shows are held Saturdays at McCullough Arena. Awards will go to first place, ribbons will go to 1st through 5th. Scholastic book fair at Hafen There will be a Scholastic Book Fair during parent teacher conferences 3-6 p.m. Oct. 29 at Hafen Elementary School. The theme is "Safari" and they urge families to bring the children for a reading safari. There will be storytellers and a build-a-book workstation, a tour bus where photos can be taken with friends and a puppet show. All funds raised from the book fair will go to the purchase of new books. The HES PTO will be holding a bake sale as well. AARP Driver Safety Program The AARP is offering a two-day driver safety class 9-1 p.m. Nov. 5 and 6. Auto insurance discounts may apply. Check with your agent. Toastmasters meeting change The Pahrump Toastmasters 1970 have changed their meeting to 6:30 p.m., the first and third Wednesday of the month, in Room 123 of Great Basin College, 551 E. The first session will be 10 a.m. - noon, and the second session will be 6-8 p.m. Both sessions will be held in the banquet room at Mountain Falls Grill Room. The agenda items include the summary of construction projects for 2009, an explanation of changes to the line extensions process, new customer care and billing software and an open discussion. 4-H GPS Club The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension 4-H will offer an opportunity for kids ages 9-19 to learn about Global Positioning Systems. The club will explore geo-cachng, a high-tech treasure hunting game. The idea is to locate hidden treasures with a GPS device. Fundraiser for the Duck Pond NyE Communities Coalition Youth Organization is holding a fundraiser for the Calvada Duck Pond. Adopt-a-Duck trading cards are available from youth group members at a minimum donation of $10 per card. There are 10 different cards to collect. Coat donations Kaye's Allstate Insurance located in the Albertson's Shopping Center is accepting slightly used and new coats for the Pahrump Kiwanis Club to provide for our community needs. Coats may be dropped at the office from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday from Sept. 15 through Nov. 15. Free book Faith Fellowship Foursquare Church is offering a free book, "One Minute After You Die." Send requests to "Free Book," P.O. Box 4716, Pahrump, NV 89041. There is a limit of one book per household/address. Allow seven to 10 days for delivery. Retired/senior program The Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteers need help. This program enables the elderly to stay in their homes by assisting with daily maintenance such as shopping, medical appointments, etc. RSVP reimburses volunteers 30 cents per mile up to $20 per month and carries worker's compensation and excess auto liability on all volunteers. Additionally, volunteers receive training, annual seminar education and appreciation award dinners. To volunteer or get more information, call Jan Lindsay at 751-5282. Addiction recovery program The LDS church is offering a church-sanctioned 12-step program to help church members overcome drug, alcohol and other addictions, find freedom from their negative effects and live in harmony with gospel principles. This is an anonymous program. Who attends and what is said remains confidential. No referrals are necessary. Meetings are open to anyone 14 years or older who can maintain church standards during the meetings. Participants under age 18 must have a parent or guardian in attendance. LDS church membership is not required and participation is free. The group will meet 7-8:30 p.m. on Thursdays. Call 727-4038 for more information. Computer Users meet The Pahrump Computer Users Group will meet at 1 p.m. Nov. 3, in the large meeting room of the Pahrump Community Library. The program this month will include "How to Share Digital Pictures Online" by Don Norvell and Mike Erwin will discuss "Different Technologies of Internet Connection." Anti-drug abuse film Volunteers are needed in making a documentary/educational film. If you are 13-19 years old and your life has been adversely affected by the use of drugs or alcohol, Teen Care needs your help to make this film a reality.
