PTSA program on drug abuse

There will be a presentation on drug abuse prevention by the Pahrump Valley High School PTSA in honor of "Red Ribbon Week" at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 20 in the freshman building at the high school.

Parents, students and teachers will have the opportunity to see youth-performed education in an engaging format.

Parent Teacher Student Association meetings are open to all parents and guardians of high school students.

Regular meetings are the third Monday of every month during the school year.

Retired/senior program

The Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteers need help.

This program enables the elderly to stay in their homes by assisting with daily maintenance such as shopping, medical appointments, etc.

RSVP reimburses volunteers 24 cents per mile up to $20 per month and carries worker's compensation and excess auto liability on all volunteers.

Additionally, volunteers receive training, annual seminar education and appreciation award dinners.

Volunteer Homeland Reserve Unit

VHRU is an organized group of retired and former law enforcement officers with the mission of providing trained and experienced resources to public safety agencies in Nevada and, potentially, to surrounding areas.

VHRU maintains a Web site describing the mission and providing information regarding the organization, leadership, and on-going activities.

The Web site also contains an application form that can be downloaded by any former law enforcement officer who wants to become a part of the organization.

Animal shelter needs volunteers

The Nye County Animal Shelter is seeking volunteers to work either at the shelter or in the spay/neuter clinic. People who love animals and want to learn new skills, should stop by the Nye County Animal Shelter, 171 N. Kittyhawk Dr., or call 751-7020.

Spay, neuter clinic

The Nye County Animal Shelter offers a low-cost spay and neuter clinic, which is not based on income and is open to everyone.

The only criteria which must be met is dogs must be current on vaccines and owners must provide proof of shots at the time of the appointment.

Free drug tests

Teen Care provides free drug tests for the children of concerned parents and guardians.

The test detects marijuana, cocaine, meth, opiates, amphetamines and more. All services are free and confidential. Teen Care provides Christian help for teens involved with drugs or alcohol.

Volunteer for SCORE

All active or retired business people are encouraged to share their knowledge and experience by being a volunteer SCORE counselor.

Sponsored by the Small Business Administration, SCORE provides free consultations to all who want to start a business. SCORE will provide training for volunteers.

Safe Place youth program

Power wheelchairs

Miracle on Wheels makes available electric power wheelchairs to non-ambulatory senior citizens 65 and older and the permanently disabled of any age, if they qualify.

Electric wheelchairs are provided to those who cannot walk and also cannot operate a manual wheelchair sufficiently or safely enough to care for themselves in their residence.

The VFW hosts a swap meet the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month 7-3 p.m. on the VFW grounds. Reservations for a spot are $7 if you bring your own table and $10 if you rent one from the VFW.

Koats for Kids

Mankin's Allstate is beginning the 3rd annual Koats for Kids drive.

Over the last three years, 1500 coats have been collected and distributed through No To Abuse.

The generous citizens of Pahrump are appreciated for their generosity in keeping children warm.

Holiday donations, Quilts for Cancer

Quilts for Cancer is seeking donations of small "lunchbox teats" to fill 250 stockings for seniors for the holidays.

In general donations should be small, individually wrapped juice boxes, fruit of all types, applesauce, crackers or pretzels with cheese or peanut butter, cookies or any other snacks.

No nuts, seeds, or popcorn.

Desert View Hospital will sponsor the 2nd annual flu clinic:

Pahrump Community Library's fall reading program, "Dino Tails," began Oct. 15.

Classes are Tiny Dinos (ages 2-3), Wednesdays 9:15-9:45 a.m. (parent must accompany child); T-rex Tails (ages 4-5), Wednesdays 10-10:45 a.m.; Story Osaurus (ages 6-12), Wednesdays 3:30-4:30 p.m.; and Teens (fifth grade and up), Thursdays 3-4 p.m.

Due to the increase in animals at the Nye County Animal Shelter and the expenses in caring for them, the fees will increase.

Beginning Nov. 1, the fees for adopting a dog will be $85 and the fees for adopting a cat or kitten will be $55.

The Inyo County Clerk Mary Roper announces Oct. 20 as the last day to register to vote in the general election Nov. 4.

Residents must complete a new voter registration card if there has been a change in name or address.

Pre-addressed, postage-free voter registration cards are available at most post offices, libraries, the DMV and some county offices.

Domestic violence vigil

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month.

The Interfaith Domestic Violence Taskforce and No To Abuse will sponsor a candlelight vigil at 7 p.m. Oct. 29 at Pahrump Family Mortuary, 4551 Vicki Ann Road.

The purpose is to celebrate those who have survived domestic violence and remember those who have died because of it.

New veteran's hospital video
