Coat donations

Kaye's Allstate Insurance located in the Albertson's Shopping Center is accepting slightly used and new coats for the Pahrump Kiwanis Club to provide for our community needs.

Coats may be dropped at the office from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday from Sept. 15 through Nov. 15.

Information seminar

The public is invited to attend an informational seminar on a nonprofit government load program allowing the purchase of a home with no money down and interest as low as 1 percent.

The seminar will be 10 a.m. Oct. 1 at the Bob Ruud Community Center.

Holiday sale

The Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church will hold a special holiday sale 8-2 p.m. Oct. 4 in the RC building at the church, 1300 E. Highway 372.

Missoula Children's Theatre

Auditions for the Missoula Children's Theatre production of "Rumplestilskin" will be 4:15-6:15 p.m. Oct. 6 in the cafetorium at Rosemary Clarke Middle School.

More than 50 roles will be cast.

Students kindergarten through 12th grade are encouraged to audition.

The MCT Tour actor/directors, Shannon Patterson and Clara Hirsh will conduct rehearsals through the week. The performance will be 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Oct. 11 in the cafetorium.

Tickets are $3 for students and $5 for adults.

Help needed

On Friday, Sept. 26, Merry and Sam King lost their son, Stoney.

He was a kind and gentle young man.

Merry and Sam do not have the capability to fund the services needed.

A Stoney King Memorial Fund has been established at the Bank of America in an attempt to raise $2000 by Friday. If 200 people give $10 each, the family will have one less heartache and can lay their son to rest.

When times are so economically hard, the horror of the loss coupled with having a son in limbo while trying to figure out how to pay for services is overwhelming.

Jeep Junkies meet

The Pahrump Jeep Junkies will have a monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Oct. 1 at Saddle West.

Jeep owners and enthusiasts are welcome.

Free community concert

Ace Homecenter will celebrate 45 years of service to Pahrump by hosting a free community concert 6-10 p.m. Oct. 4 at Petrack Park.

The Tony Marques Band, the official house band for Toby Keith's "I Love This Bar" and Grill in Las Vegas, will be the performing artist.

The Maverick will host food and drinks. The proceeds go to benefit the PVHS Athletic Department.

Laureate Omicron meets

The Laureate Omicron chapter of Beta Sigma Phi will travel to Boulder City on Saturday to attend "Art in the Park."

A meeting will be held Oct. 13 in the home of Lois Heyer and a guest speaker from the Nye County Sheriff's Office will present a program on personal and home security.

Weight loss seminar

Genealogical Society meets

The Pahrump Nevada Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 2 in the multi-purpose room of the LDS Church, corner of West Street and Wilson Road.

Social time begins at 6:30 p.m.

The guest speaker will be Sunny Vasquez of Desert Spirit Trading Post presenting a talk on Indian lore.

VFW in October

The VFW hosts a swap meet the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month 7-3 p.m. on the VFW grounds. Reservations for a spot are $7 if you bring your own table and $10 if you rent one from the VFW.

There is free parking and the Marine Corps League are serving up the hotdogs and chips for $1.50.

The American Legion, Riders and Auxiliary meets on the 3rd Thursday of the month 6-7 p.m.

The MOC/MOCA Cooties meet on the 3rd Saturday at 11 a.m., followed by the VFW Ladies Auxiliary at 1 p.m.

Tuesday -- DAV meeting/ Auxiliary;

Wednesday -- poker, noon;

Oktoberfest at Honeysuckle Park

The United Way of Pioneer Territory will host the annual Oktoberfest 2 p.m. until dusk Oct. 11 in Honeysuckle Park.

There will be live German music, a wet T-shirt contest and bratwurst, sauerkraut and potato salad for $6.

Beer, soft drinks and water will be available, and hot dogs and chips for the kids.

Free vendor spaces are available.

EAA chapter meeting

The Experimental Aircraft Association chapter 1160, will hold the monthly meeting at 10 a.m. Oct. 4 in Phil Shallenberger's hangar, corner of Helicopter Road and Jet Place in the Calvada Aeropark.

The meeting will consist of planning the Young Eagles rally on Nov. 1. There will also be a short DVD on combating terrorism.

Read for the Record

Jumpstart is promoting literacy and attempting to set a record.

On Oct. 2, more that half-a-million children and adults across the nation will read the book "Couduroy" for the largest shared reading experience record.

The event will take place in Honeysuckle park and the sign up deadline is Oct. 2.

Free computer instruction is available for beginning-level computer users on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Sign-up in person available at the library.

Shakespeare Made Simple will be held 10 a.m.-noon the 3rd Saturday of each month.

Tuesdays 4-6 p.m., is Shakespeare Readers' Theatre. Both are free and open to all ages.

There will be no movie day in September due to the Fall Festival. Movies will resume in October.

Senior trip to Laughlin

The Pahrump Senior Center will host a bus trip to Laughlin Oct. 15. The bus will leave the VFW on Homestead Road at 8 a.m. and arrive at Edgewater Casino at 11 a.m.

Participants will receive a voucher for a free lunch buffet. There is a shopping outlet and a movie theater across the street.

The return trip will leave the casino at 5 p.m. and arrive at the VFW at 8 p.m.

Fish Fry

Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church will have a fish fry 4-7 p.m. Oct. 3 at the church, 781 E. Gamebird Road.

Fried or baked fish dinners include slaw and fries for $6, two fish tacos with fries for $6, New England clam chowder is $2 and punch and coffee are free.

Koats for Kids

Mankin's Allstate is beginning the 3rd annual Koats for Kids drive.

Over the last three years, 1500 coats have been collected and distributed through No To Abuse.

The citizens of Pahrump are appreciated for their generosity in keeping children warm.

The collection point is the office, 1271 S. Highway 160.

Flu shot clinics

The Bureau of Community Health will hold walk-in flu shot clinics 8:30-4 p.m. Oct. 2; 8:30-12:30 p.m. Oct. 3; 8:30-4 p.m. Oct. 6; 8:30-4 p.m. Oct. 13; and 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-4 p.m. Oct. 22 at the clinic, 250 N. Highway 160, Suite 6.

The flu shot is offered to adults only.

Bring Medicare or Medicaid cards to the clinic. Senior Dimensions is accepted as well. The cost to all others is $20 cash or check.
