An estimated $40,000 was grossed during the annual banquet by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Mount Charleston Chapter at Mountain Falls Golf Club Saturday night.

Coordinator Tracie Dreyer said the event will net about $18,000 to $19,000 for the foundation, which benefits wildlife habitat preservation. Half of the funds raised will stay in Nevada.

Dreyer said the economy resulted in a drop in the fundraising this year. Last year, the event grossed $67,000, she said.

"We took a lot of our merchandise out so we didn't kill anybody with spending. Fewer items were put up for auction this time," Dreyer said.

The item that brought in the most money at the auction was the custom gun cabinet, she said. But the biggest money maker of the night was the Pick of the Herd game, in which participants chip in $20 for a raffle with the winner able to pick up anything from the live or silent auction. Dreyer said that grossed more than $2,400.

Regional Director Michael Friedenberger said the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation spent $12 million in Nevada doing project work to benefit wildlife. One of the key priorities in the state will be preservation of the Mount Charleston elk herd, he said.

There were 148 people who bought tickets to the dinner, down from 220 people last year.

Six record elk mounts were on display as part of the Great Elk Tour, a traveling exhibit.

They included a Utah sheds non-typical elk, a 432 point rack; the California world record tule elk, 379 points; the Montana non-typical elk 429-1/8 points; the Wyoming sheds typical elk, 404 points; North Dakota typical elk, 368-1/8 and the Idaho non-typical elk, 385 points.
