TOPS to aid 'Tots'

Three chapters of Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) will come together under sponsorship from Keep Off Ponds Sensibly (KOPS) Honor Society for the "Toys for Tots" fun day at 10 a.m. Nov. 15 at First Southern Baptist Church, corner of Fehrs Way and Highway 160.

The event is in hopes the day will provide "Toys" for children for Christmas.

There will be a silent auction, music, skits and a pot-luck luncheon.

Academic assembly

The Pahrump Valley High School Renaissance Class is a school organization promoting academics, attendance and school spirit.

They will host the academic assembly on Nov. 14 and are looking for donations of money, and goods and services to use as prizes for students with high grade-point averages and perfect attendance, as well as for teachers who do a fantastic job.

Any form of support is helpful in cash, prizes or gift cards.

PAC membership meeting

The Pahrump Valley Arts Council will hold the quarterly general membership meeting 9:30-11:30 a.m. Nov. 15 in the Pahrump Community Library.

PAC welcomes all artists and all disciplines. The public is invited to attend.

Computer User's Group meets

The Pahrump Computer User's Group will meet at 1 p.m. Dec. 1 in the large meeting room of the Pahrump Community Library.

The program will be "How to Manage Files and Folders in Windows Vista," by Don Norvell and Mike Erwin will discuss "New and Improved Computer Technology in the Past and Advancements on the Horizon." Park in the rear of the library where there is ample space.

The meeting is free and open to the public.

Scout uniforms and equipment

Pahrump has a number of boys ages 7-16 interested in scouting but need uniforms and gear. Donations of camping equipment and uniforms are appreciated.

Pick up is available or items may be dropped at Pahrump Party Supply.

Animal Shelter notice

The Nye County Animal Shelter is unable to spay or neuter pets for the public at this time. They hope to offer the service in the future.

Anti-drug abuse film

Volunteers are needed in making a documentary/educational film.

If you are 13-19 years old and your life has been adversely affected by the use of drugs or alcohol, Teen Care needs your help to make this film a reality.

Participation may be an opportunity to help someone else through sharing a personal experience. Volunteers will receive gift cards from Wal-Mart or Starbucks.

Pahrump Rotary Club

The Rotary Club of Pahrump Valley meets at noon every Wednesday in the Pahrump Nugget banquet hall.

Rotary members are a dedicated group of people serving in the community.

Library fall reading program

Pahrump Community Library's fall reading program, "Dino Tails," began Oct. 15.

Classes are Tiny Dinos (ages 2-3), Wednesdays 9:15-9:45 a.m. (parent must accompany child); T-rex Tails (ages 4-5), Wednesdays 10-10:45 a.m.; Story Osaurus (ages 6-12), Wednesdays 3:30-4:30 p.m.; and Teens (fifth grade and up), Thursdays 3-4 p.m.

There is no fee to attend the program and no prior sign up necessary.

The program will run through Dec. 17 with no classes during the week of Thanksgiving.

Evening church service

The Church of the Redeemed Interdenominational Church welcomes everyone who cannot attend Sunday morning church services to attend the evening service, 6 p.m. every first Sunday, 4300 E. Navajo Blvd.

Notice to veterans

Those serving in the military from April 6, 1917 to the present have an office in Pahrump and Tonopah to take advantage of earned military benefits including: compensation, pension, education and death and burial benefits.

The Pahrump office is located in JobConnect in the Calvada Eye, Building A.

The Tonopah office is located in the Nye Regional Medical Center on Main Street.

Ken Shockley and his staff work full time to assist in doing all they can to help veterans take advantage of their earned benefits.

The hours are 8-05 p.m. at the office locations or call 537-2323.

Those unable to come to the office may get a home visit to get the ball rolling.

Fundraiser for the Duck Pond

NyE Communities Coalition Youth Organization is holding a fundraiser for the Calvada Duck Pond.

Adopt-a-Duck trading cards are available from youth group members at a minimum donation of $10 per card.

There are 10 different cards to collect.

Proceeds will be used for supplies and improvements for the duck pond.

Tent revival volunteers

Heritage Bible Church is seeking enthusiastic volunteers to help plan the 2009 tent revival.

The next meeting will be at 1 p.m. Nov. 15 at the church, 3061 E. Heritage Drive at Homestead Road.

AGLOW meets

AGLOW, the international, interdenominational Christian women's organization, will meet at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 15 at the Rock Vineyard Church, beside Smith's Food and Drug.

The guest speaker will be Shelia Maharaj from New Hope Fellowship.

Refreshments will be available at 9 a.m. Go early to fellowship.

PVHS PTA

Pahrump Valley High School will hold the monthly Parent Teacher Student Association meeting at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 17 in the freshmen building. All parents are invited to attend.

The Nye County Sheriff's Office will hold a free child seat safety inspection 4-8 p.m. Nov. 21 at Albertson's Shopping Center.

All church hymn sing

Shepherd of the Valley Church will host a fifth Sunday Sing at 6 p.m. Nov. 30 in the Bob Ruud Community Center.

Refreshments will follow the sing. They will need cookies, brownies and other finger foods.

VFW in November

The VFW hosts a swap meet the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month 7-3 p.m. on the VFW grounds. Reservations for a spot are $7 if you bring your own table and $10 if you rent one from the VFW.

There is free parking and the Snacks by Hilda will serve up the hotdogs and chips for $1.50.

The American Legion, Riders and Auxiliary meets on the third Thursday of the month 6-7 p.m.

The third Saturday at 11 a.m., VFW Ladies Auxiliary at 1 p.m.

Library calendar

Free computer instruction is available for beginning computer users on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Sign-up in person available at the library.

Classes are: "Basic Computer," "Beyond Basics," "Advanced Basics," and "Genealogy." Check at the library for dates and times.

Shakespeare Made Simple will be held 10 a.m.-noon the 3rd Saturday of each month.

Tuesdays 4-6 p.m., is Shakespeare Readers' Theatre. Both are free and open to all ages.

Free DVD

Faith Fellowship is offering a free copy of the DVD, "The Greatest Gamble" with Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort to anyone who is interested.

Limit of one DVD per household. Allow seven to 10 days for delivery.

Adult literacy

The Pahrump Community Library has a sufficient number of literacy tutors and is ready for students.

Adults interested in getting help with reading skills, call 727-5930, ext. 19.

The service is free.

Pet adoptions

The Nye County Animal Shelter will hold pet adoptions 10-2 p.m. every Saturday at Hollywood Video, 240 S. Highway 160.

Due to the increase in animals at the Nye County Animal Shelter and the expenses in caring for them, the fees will increase.

Beginning Nov. 1, the fees for adopting a dog will be $85 and the fees for adopting a cat or kitten will be $55.

Fees include spay/neuter, vaccination, rabies shot, a bag of food and one-year county license.

Soroptimist awards

The Soroptimist International Pahrump Valley is looking for qualified candidates who meet the criteria to receive two awards.

For the Violet Richardson Award: Candidates must be girls between the ages of 14 and 17 and actively volunteering and giving back to the community.

The award is a monetary gift and a matching donation will go to her charitable organization of choice.

The Women's Opportunity Award: Candidate must be a woman who is the main financial provider for her family. She must be continuing her education through an undergraduate or vocational/trade school program and she must have a financial need.

Applications for both awards are available at American Family Insurance, 250 S. Highway 160, Suite B-8.

The deadline for applications is Dec. 1.

Outreach for women

Family Hair Affair will hold an outreach for battered women 7-11 a.m. Nov. 15 at the shop, 421 S. Frontage Road, Suite 3.

There will be free haircuts (come with hair already washed), pizza provided by Domino's, entertainment by Johnny V, drinks and ice donated by Worden's Farmer's Insurance and Country Express and free foot massages.

The Pahrump Alliance for Valley Economic Development will hold a general meeting at 5 p.m. Nov. 18 in the Bob Ruud Community Center.

Express bus

Regent Holidays is sponsoring a bus to transport any Pahrump residents who want to comment on their application for an amended permit to resume Pahrump to Las Vegas bus service before the Nevada Transportation Authority.

The 55-passenger bus will leave at 8 a.m. Nov. 20 from the Pahrump Nugget parking lot. Transportation is free to the hearing which begins at 10 a.m., though the Regent Holidays item is expected to be at the end of the agenda.

The bus will transport people interested in testifying to the hearing which will take place at 2920 S. Jones Blvd. in Las Vegas.

PAC youth gift-making class

The Pahrump Arts Council will present a free "Art for Young People" Christmas gift-making class 11-1 p.m. Nov. 22 at the Pahrump Valley Museum.

The class is for youth ages 8 and up, who must be pre-registered and signed in and out by a parent or guardian.

Carol's polymer clay class will be for votive candle holders decorated with beads and Renee will teach design and make bracelets and/or necklaces using multi-colored glass chips and Swarovski crystals.

R.S.V.P. as soon as possible. Class size is very limited.
