Elias Armendariz didn't win a fourth consecutive individual championship, but he helped lead Pahrump Valley to the Nevada Class 3-A state wrestling title.

Brittney Lindgren, who earned 12 varsity letters in four years, played on an underdog volleyball team that won a Southern 3-A regional title and a berth in the state tournament in the fall. In the winter, the senior guard played a key role for a Lady Trojans' basketball team that won league and regional championships before bowing in the state semifinals in the winter. In the spring, Lindgren was on a fast-pitch softball team that shared the regular-season title, then won the regional championship before getting eliminated in the state semifinals.

Christine Gamble was a stellar performer for the girls' basketball team that won 25 of 33 games. In softball, the 6-foot first baseman slugged two key home runs as PVHS won the regional championship.

Iggy Wagner was an all-state selection in both soccer and baseball, where his speed and instincts helped define the character of both teams.

Wednesday night, these four Pahrump Valley High School student-athletes were recognized for their achievements, both on the field of play and in the classroom, at Senior Awards Night, in the gymnasium.

Athletes from the class of 2008 received significant academic awards as well; of the 53 Millenium scholarship recipients, 26 were athletes. Of the five Nevada high school scholars, three were athletes, including salutatorian Devyn Moen, who had been recognized earlier this spring as one of Nevada's top 20 scholar athletes. Of 13 earning Student Council recognition, eight were involved in sports.

Of eight Keith Maeder scholarship winners, six were student-athletes. Three of the four Kiwanis Club scholarship winners were involved in athletics, and of the 32 honors graduates, 17 were student-athletes.

Armendariz and teammate Frank Lopez received full-ride scholarships -- worth $33,000 each -- to study and wrestle at Dickinson State in North Dakota. Dickinson is a perennial challenger for NAIA Division II wrestling titles.

Of the 22 winners of senior academic letters (4.0 GPA and better), 10 were athletes. In the 3.5 to 3.9 GPA group, seven of the 19 were involved in sports.

Several PVHS athletes were all-state academic team members; the 2007 3-A girl golfers were recognized as an all-state academic team for the second straight year after winning a title playing the game.

The Class of 2008 -- 222 seniors in all -- generated $900,000 in scholarships.
